“WONT SATISFY,” SAYS MR. GUTTRIDGE What effect will the new films with sound accompaniment have on orchestras and stage bands? Mr. Maurice Guttridge, leader of the stage band now at., the Regent, thinks New Zealand’s musical taste will not be satisfied by synchronised music. “With theatres concentrating on the musical side of their bills,” he said, “the sudden introduction of a new form of entertainment, though interesting from a novelty standpoint does not point to immediate success where music is concerned. “New York and London, with their vast moving population, can afford to cater for the tastes of their millions with something new, for travellers passing through demand something unusual of these cities. But it is interesting to learn that whereas several New York theatres have dropped their orchestras, others are doubling the size of theirs.”
