Delivering liis first and probably his last important speech in the East, in the heart of the strongest Smith territory, namely, New York City, Mr. j H. C. Hoover, Republican candidate ; for the Presidency, declared that the I Democrats had revived “a series of j proposals which, if they were adopted, would be a long step toward the abandonment of our American system, and a surrender to the destructive operation of Governmental conduct of commercial business.” Mr. Hoover then branded as “State Socialism” the prohibition, farm relief, and water-power proposals advocated by the Democratic candidate. Mr. Hoover summarised as fol lows: “It is proposed that we change from Prohibition to State purchase and sale of liquor; also, if their agricultural relief programme means anything, it means that , the Government shall directly or indirectly buy and sell agricultural products; and w r e are to go into the hydro-electrical power business ”
