SLOT PHONE FOR BIRKENHEAD

After repeated representations to the Post and Telegraph Department, a start is now being made to install a public slot telephone at Birkenhead. The local office of the New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Kazembe is to be dispatched from Auckland at noon on Thursday for Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin to complete the discharge of her cargo. SALTERSGATE ARRIVES. —An arrival in the stream at Auckland late last evening was the tramp steamer Saltersgate, with a cargo of phosphates from Nauru Island. This morning the vessel berthed at King’s Wharf, where the whole of her cargo is to be discharged. She was last at Auckland about ten weeks ago, / when she put out a part cargo of phosphates, and after completing at Wanganui bunkered at Westport. The vessel spent a week riding off the island waiting for the loading berth, and sailed eventually from Nauru on her present voyage on October 9. She experienced strong north-easterly winds and heavy seas all the way, which brought her speed down from the usual nine knots to six ■ knots for the greater part of the trip. The gale, was at its height on Sunday and Monday, October 13 and 14. High, confused seas were shipped fore and aft. and some of the deck gear was carried away. Captain John Storm is in command of the Saltersgate, and associated with him are the following officers: Chief, Mr. 11. L. Brown; second, Mr. A. Gibson; third, Mr. B. Farnaby; chief steward, Air. R. Henderson and Alacfarlane, Limited, the local agents for the Saltersgate, advise that the vessel is expected to complete discharge by Saturday next, when she will sail for Westport for bunkers. PORT OF ONEHJNGA— The Rarawa leaves Onehunga at halfpast three this afternoon for New Plymouth. She is due back again on Thursday morning. The Hauturu Is to be dispatched from Onehunga at four o’clock this afternoon for Raglan, Kawhia and Fort Waikato. She is due back again at six o’clock on Friday, morning. The Anchor steamer Alexander is to be dispatched from Onehunga to-morrow for Nelson and West Coast ports. The Arapawa is expected to arrive at Onehunga on Thursday morning from Wanganui. At noon on Friday she is to be dispatched again for the same port.
