MAN CAPTURED IN STREET Constable’s Smart Arrest CLOTHING and dress materials, valued at £37 10s. were stolen from the premises of Sargood, Son and Ewen, Hobson Street, early last evening.

Constable Putt, who was on duty in the street, overtook two men in Vincent Street. They were carrying the stolen goods.

One of the men was arrested, but the other escaped. It is believed that arrangements had been made to return to the building and take away more clothing and material. to a value of about £2OO. About 9.45 o’clock last evening a civilian, Mr. William Allen, informed Constable Putt, who was on duty in Hobson Street, that he had just seen two men leave the “Iris” Underclothing Factory, belonging to Sargood. Son and Ewen, and that the men had gone up Vincent Street. Constable Putt went after the men and questioned them. They were carrying a large quantity of women’s clothing and rolls of cloth which had been wrapped in brown paper. The constable asked if he could examine the goods. One of the men dashed away, but the constable grabbed the other and took him to the Police Station, along with the goods, which were later identified as those belonging to Sargood, Son and Ewen Entrance to the premises had been gained by breaking a window at the end of the factory, which opens on to a courtyard at the main block of street buildings. The latch had been lifted, and the

window opened from the inside. Cases of clothing had been broken and the garments were lying around in disorder. Made-up garments and piece goods had been taken. The firm has not yet estimated its total loss and will Have to look up stock records to judge the correct amount. SUSPECT REMANDED Figuring in what Sub-I nspector McCarthy referred to as a particularly serious case, Bertie John Christian appeared at the Police Court this morning. Christian, a grocer aged 27. was charged with breaking and entering Sargood, Son and Ewen’s warehouse in Hobson Street and stealing goods valued at £37 10s. On the application of the sub-inspec-tor, who said that there was a good deal for the police to do in regard to the case, a remand was granted for Christian’s application for bail was refused. After the man had left the dock Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., suggested that, it the case should turn out to be less serious than the police then thought, bail might be allowed. Sub-Inspector McCarthy: There is no chance of that. It may be even more serious than it appears at present.
