“QUEEN KELLY”
LIFE IN GERMAN EAST AFRICA “Queen Kelly,” and not “The Swamp,” will be>the title of the next Gloria Swanson picture for United Artists. This is the story written by Erich Von Stroheim for his own direction. “Queen Kelly” is the character with which Miss Swanson follows “Sadie Thompson.” The queen is of undoubted character until she visits German East Africa. Walter Byron, Samuel Goldwyn’s young English actor, plays the part of a German royal prince. He will first bo seen in America opposite Vilma Banky in “The Awakening.” Von Stroheim will begin camera work before the first of October, the picture being scheduled for 1929 release.
Undoubtedly one of the British screen artists of to-day is* Miles Mander, who gives an unforgettable performance in George Jacoby’s production of Henry Arthur Jones’s famous play. “The Physician.” This film, a Gaumont British production, has a most unusual subject for its theme, and caused quite a sensation on its presentation in London and on the Continent. The play provides strong dramatic force, developed round the doctor’s problem of putting professional duty before sentiment and saving the dipsomaniac. In this manner he kills his own chances of winning the girl with whom both he and the dipsomaniacal temperance crusader are in love. Miles Mander, lan Hunter and Humberston Wright have leading roles.
