WAIHI’S JOY WEEK

“WAYBACKS’ ” GREAT WELCOME BUCKING CAR AND “TAILORMADE COWS” (From Our Own Con'cspondent) WAIHI, Monday. The spirit of carnival held sway in Waihi on Friday and Saturday and the town’s first shopping week passed oft most successfully. During the week the people turned out in good numbers and shopping was fairly brisk. Each afternoon sports and competitions were provided for the school children in the main street and the youngsters had a royal time. The pinnacle of the carnival was reached on Friday, however, when the famous “Waybacks" came to town. Farmers and their friends from the surrounding districts flocked into Waihi to see the hardy members of the hinterland, and the business portion of the town was as crowded as on Christmas Eve. Everyone was in good spirits. The visitors entered Seddon Street at 9 o’clock and wended their way in a straggling procession to the memorie.l. where they were accorded a welcome to the town such as few family* have ever had. And what a Dad and Mum and the in the craziest Ford that ever backfired. It bucked and slithered and threw the “girls” into the street and the crowd into convulsions. There were “tailor-made” “cows” and “horses” that talked back to their drivers, and the most weird lot of nondescript characters that ever donned false whiskers. Over two thousand people flocked into the King's Hall to hear the unofficial welcome by the unofficial Mayor,” where a good deni of fun was created by “his Worship” and the "Reverend Mr. Greenfields.” On Saturday morning a pets’ parade took place and almost every bird or animal that was ever seen around a house had a place in the procession, which brought the week’s fun to a close,
