Wet Weather Prevents Play Formal Ceremonies Held THOSE clubs that selected Saturday for their opening day were rather unfortunate, the heavy rain that fell in the morning making most • greens unplayable. In most instances only formal openings were held, but one or two clubs were able to open up a green and get off a few games.

BUCKLAND * The Buckland Bowling Club held its official opening for the season on Saturday afternoon, but owing to the wet weather no play was possible. There was a good attendance, including representatives of neighbouring clubs. The president of the club, Mr. R. T. Wright, declared both the croquet and bowling greens open for play and Mrs. Wright threw the first jack. The remainder of the afternoon was spent in the Buckland Hall with music and dancing. Band items were contributed by the Pukekohe Municipal Band. OPOTIKI CLUB The members of the Opotiki Bowling Club held the formal opening of their green on Saturday. The president, Mr. G. Dawson, referred to the very successful season last year and predicted that this season would be even more successful. He’ said he regretted the green superintendent, Mr. C. Gordon, had declared the green fit not fit for play owing to bad weather, but anticipated a large attendance next Saturday. Mr. C. Bidwell, president of the Citizens’ Club, returned thanks for the invitation to his club to be present. ST. HELIERS Following are the results of the club games played at St. Heliers on Saturday: Tyndall, Hul.se, S. White, J. Diamond, 26, v. Devarve, Thompson, Hart, Crawshaw, 15; Bradley, Gray, Keys, Holdsworth, 15, w Cottrell, Dawson, Knight, Twiname, TAKAPUNA The official opening of the Takapuna Club took place in the presence of a representative crowd of bowlers and visitors. Owing to the rain there were no games, the opening taking the form of a social afternoon. Afternoon tea was served in the clubhouse. The president, Mr. F. A. Audly, declared ;he season open. Other speakers were the Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. Williamson, Mr. J. Pascoe, representing the Auckland Centre, and Mr. A. Harris, M.P. OTOROHANGA Though the afternoon turned out fine, it was deemed inadvisable, owing to the persistent, drizzling rain in the morning, to play on the Otoronanga green after the official opening on Saturday afternoon. The president, Mr. H. Crosby, welcomed the visitors, and then called on Mrs. Crosby to bowl up the jack, after which he declared the green open. Te Jvuiti bowlers were represented by Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, Mayor of Te Kuiti, and the United Party’s candidate for Waitomo electorate. Afternoon tea was provided by wives of the members. HILLSBORO CLUB Following are the results of games played:—Farland, Hardman, Wilson, Bryant. 20, v. McMillan, Preston, Thompson, Williamson, 19; Ambury, Monk, Plat, Sheath, 27, v. Gregory, Scarborough, Stringer, Whitten, 14; Sainty, Wilson, Mountain, Kelly, 28, v. Wiggins, Young, Pollard, Wilkinson, 33; Bagley, Thompson, Thomas, Watson, 18, v. Waters, Williams, Goldsmith, C. Mountain, 16. TAKAPUNA CLUB Fluttering pennants denoted the official opening-day of the Takapuna Bowling Club on Saturday, .but although declared open for the season, no play was possible.

Speeches were given by Mr. F. A. Audley, the president. Mr. J. W. Williamson, Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. Pascoe, of the Auckland Centre, and Mr. A. Harris, M.P. Afternoon tea was dispensed in the navilion, the decorations being of a novel variety. Large numbers of various types of airplanes, from Southern Crosses to Moths, were effectively used. This scheme was ’worked out and applied by Mr. and Mrs. Riddell. TE PAPAPA CLUB The following games were played:— Stevenson, Buckley, Angus, Speight, lb, v. WAIUKU CLUB OFFICIAL OPENING 21 ST BIRTHDAY ....rler adverse weather conditions the official opening of the Waiuku Bowling and Croquet Club was held on Saturday, in the presence of a fair number of nlavers and friends. Visitors wei e present from Pukekohe, Waiuku and Auckland. In extending a hearty welcome to the visitors and all members, the president, Mr. A. P. Jack, voiced his pleasure at having Mr. R- Lagleton, of Auckland, in attendance. Referring to the 21st birthday of the club, Mr. Jack mentioned that three of the original members, Messrs. S. T. Rossi ter, 11. Rung and A. M. Barriball, were with them that day to take part in the function. The former was the first. president of the club. After paying a tribute to the excellent work performed by Mr. H. Flavell. the green superintendent, and to the croquet players for their financial help during the year, the president asked Messrs. S. T. Rossiter and R. Lagleton to address those present. Mr. Rossiter said that since the inception of the club, many of the original members had passed on, while others had left the district. He sincerely hoped that the club would continue to prosper. Mr. Eagleton thanked all for the cordial welcome extended to him and remarked on the wonderful time he had while on tour with the New Zealand bowlers. He hoped the Waiuku Club would have a very successful year. Congratulatory telegrams were received from Mr. S. Coldicutt, president of the Auckland Centre, and Mr. Deeble, president of the Tuakau Club. Mrs. Jack threw the first kitty and bowled the first bowl, and Mrs. D. Neil, president of the Croquet Club, hit the first ball on the croquet green, and the 192 S season was declared open.
