AN EASY GALLOP

COMMENDATION’S WIN DEAD HEAT IN BIG EVENT (Special to THE SUX) MASTERTON, Saturday. The weather was showery for the Masterton meeting, but the course was in good order, and in view of the YVellington meeting the racing was interesting all day. Totalisator receipts were £13,979, against £12,901. Nursery Handicap The whole of the big field of 17 contested the Nursery Handicap, and favouritism rested with Royal Flyer, Coon Song and Courtlike. Royal Flyer began smartly, and soon was at the 'head of affairs. He led into che straight, with Equitant showing up well on the rails, but the favourite kept him off to win by three-quarters of a length. Duellona was two lengths away third, and Push and Sapient next. The Maiden Rillet was & good favourite for the Maiden Stakes, but fell away early in the race. Lady Spear got out well and took charge* from Stanchion and Tcheka, and led the pair of them to the straight. A good race to the post ensued, in which Tcheka finished very nicely to win by half a length from Lady Spear, while Stanchion was a good third and Mothplane fourth. Tcheka looked really well and won so nicely that he might be very useful this season. Y r aucleuse, who was well backed, got away badly. Stanchion and Lady Spear will both be better for the race. High-Weight Handicap In the very mixed field which contested the High-YVeight Handicap, Starboard Light was a hot favourite. Lin Arlington, who was pulling hard, led out from Star Area and Hymgreat, but Star Area soon ran to the front and

led across the top from Lin Arlington, Starboard Light, Hymgreat, Pantagruel and Shining Armour. Star Area was well clear in the straight and was still in charge f half a furlong from home, where Shining Armour came in with a late run and won by a neck from Star Area, while Starboard Light was a fair third and Lady Gay and Grand National next. Lansdowne Handicap Carterton form was followed in the Lansdowne Handicap, both Y r eronese and. Arrow Boy being well backed. There was good money also for Historic and Baskier. Baskier led at the start from Rameses, Arrow Boy and First Ruler. Arrow Boy took charge at the distance and won well by half a length from Rameses, with Cold Air a close third and King Quex right up fourth. Kalos and Bourse followed. Masterton Handicap Blimp was a short priced favourite in the Masterton Handicap, the principal event of the day, and in a great finish he got up in' time to dead heat with Royal Game. Royal Game and Vigilance made the running when the field entered the back stretch from Blimp, Imperial Spark and Wild Pigeon, who were in line. The order was the same across the top, where David Garrick was last. Royal Game took charge and looked like winning. Then Wild Pigeon shot up, and finally Blimp came with a late run resulting in his dead heating with Royal Game. Wild Pigeon was only three-quarters of a length away and Black Mint was a, close fourth. The New Zealand Cup horses, Blimp and Black Mint, both acquitted themselves well. Lawn Handicap Except that Moorgas was a good favourite, the betting on the Lawn Handicap was very even. Holus Bolus ran to the front and led along the back from Moorgas and Rotowhero. Gold Cure moved up quickly, and crossing the top was with Moorgas in behind Holus Bolus, with Rotowhero and Full Mark next. , Gold Cure led into the straight, where Moorgas and Full Mark were in the picture. Gold Cure faded, and Billion and Courageous rushed up from the back. Courageous winning by a length and a-half from Billion, who was half a length ahead of Imarosebud, with Full Mark fourth and Moorgas fifth. Grandstand Handicap Commendation was favourite for the Grandstand Handicap. He left with the field and was a winner at almost any stage. Teri and Kilmezzo led from Pangolin and Lin Arlington, with Commendation next. Going easily, the last-named took charge well down the straight and won very easily by about two and a-half lengths from Teri, with King Midas three-quarters of a length away, third, and Horomea, Kilmezzo and Pangolin all close up. Electric Handicap Dry Area was backed to a short price in the Electric Hack Handicap, and next in demand were The Dove and Miss Gowie.
