N.Z. CIVIL SERVICE PRAISED
HIGHER PAY ADVOCATED “I believe the civil servant is one of the finest in the Empire,” announced Mr. J. Hogg, of Dunedin, vice-president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, yesterday afternoon, at the annual meeting of the society. Several speakers added their praise of New Zealand’s civil service. “I feel that if the civil service is to be made attractive to men of capacity,” said Mr. Ernest W. Hunt, of Wellington, society president, “the salaries of the higher administrative officers should be made sufficient to retain them. High-class work is being paid better in private concerns. “Economy in administration can only be effected by having fully qualified and competent officials in control of the large Government departments. To provide adequate remuneration for the higher officials would cost a comparatively small amount. The Government would make a profitable investment by adopting the course suggested.” Last evening visiting members were entertained at a dinner, at which Mr. P. J. Dawson, chairman of the Auckland committee, presided. There were nearly 100 members at the annual meeting.
