MR. BALDWIN’S DEPUTY
LORD HAILSHAM TO ACT British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Thursday. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Sir Austen Chamberlain, is still confined to his bed, but the improvement in his condition is being maintained. The Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin, has asked Lord Hailsham, Lord Chancellor, to act for him while he is absent on holiday at Aix-les-Bains. It is understood that if it had not been for the illness of Sir Austen he would have been appointed Acting-Prime Minister, as he was during Mr. Baldwin’s recent absence in Canada.
