Milk Suppliers and Vendors Disagree

WHOLESALE PRICES CO-OPERATIVE SYSTEM SUGGESTED Failure to agree on the basis of wholesale prices to be paid to milk producers next season has caused a deadlock between the Auckland Whole Milk Producers’ Association and the Auckland Milk Vendors’ Association.

The producers are going into the proposal of taking over the retail business, on similar lines to he municipal distribution in Wellington. A delegation was in Wellington last week, and considers that a saving of 2d a gallon would result with the system in Auckland. Mr. H. C. Bull, president, told a meeting, representative of 75 per cent, of the suppliers in Auckland, that the City Council would not be expected to undertake distribution, but its assistance would be welcomed in establishing a producers’ co-opera-tive concern. Mr. Bull said the meeting was firm in its determination not to accept a lower price, because of the wasteful competitive methods of the retail system. WOULD NOT AGREE Last month the producers would not accept the vendors’ offer of payment on a basis of Id a gallon less than half the average retail price. Tlie vendors would not agree to the payment of 3d less than half the average retail price. The vendors announce that a substantial reduction will be made in the retail price on September 1. Mr. G E. Tansley, president of the vendors’ association, gave this out at a meeting yesterday. He w T as unable to make a statement on the position with the producers. In the meantime, farmers are making their own bargains with the retailers. To-day it was stated that no further developments were expected until next week.
