THE “TOTE” AFLOAT
INSTALLED ON MANY BIG LINERS A new sphere of usefulness has been found for the “Tote” in controlling the inevitable daily guessing competitions on liners. No voyage on an ocean liner is complete without at least one mild gamble on the number of miles made a day, not to mention betting on the sports events that enliven the trip, and here the totalisator has been introduced, first as a novelty and then retained as a satisfactory means of handling the bets. The system was first introduced on board the Australian passenger vessels, and has now been widely adopted. The totalisator is placed in a prominent position on the promenade deck and passengers can purchase tickets according to the number of prospective subscribers. A small percentage of the total subscribed is usually deducted for deserving charities on shore, which thus receive material benefits from the amusements of pasengers.
