The New Zealand Old English Game Fowl Club held its annual club show last week in connection with the Hutt Valley Poultry Club’s annual fixture. Mr. Alf Robinson, Nelson, was one of the most successful exhibitors, his bright red cock winning the “AgmeuSmith” Shield for the best Old English Game: also the Hutt Valley Club’s challenge trophy for best bird in the show, as well as two other cups and four specials. The bird was bred by Mr. Robinson from descendants of Mr. Agmen-Smith’s stock, which that fancier imported from Eug-

land some time ago. Mr. Bust, Christchurch, made the awards, and in commenting on the exhibits stated they were the finest lot of Old English Game he had seen for years. A deputation of poultrymen last week waited on the Hon. O. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, with respect to the matter of a Government subsidy on the export of eggs. The Minister gave the deputation a good hearing and has now made it public that the Government will do its best to assist poultry farmers. TARANAKI EGG-LAYING CONTEST The following are the leading birds for the 15th week in the Taranaki laying test, held at Normanby:—White Leghorns, Mr. A. J. Davey’s No. 3 bird, with 79 eggs; being closely followed by Mr. E. Wright’s No. 2 bird and Mr. G. L. Gaylard’s No. 1 bird, each with 76 eggs. One bird, belonging to Mr. R. V. Jackson, died during the week, having laid 72 eggs during the competition. Black Minorcas, Mr. J. K. Hawkins’s bird, with 35 eggs; Black Orpingtons, Mr. G. L. Gaylard’s bird, with 62 eggs; Light Sussex, Mr. H. Kirkwood’s bird, with 57 eggs; Rhode Island Reds, Mr. C. C. Cleaver’s bird, with 55 eggs; White Wyandottes, Mr. A. Gibbons’s bird (No. 1), with 72 eggs; Fawn and White Runner Ducks, Mr. V. L. Gane’s duck, with 86 eggs, closely followed by Mr. G. L. Gaylard’s duck, with 83 eggs.

The Waiuku Poultry Show, which was held last week-end, was the best show yet held by this society. The number and quality of exhibits were superior to those of previous shows. The “Sylvesta” Challenge Cup for the best fancy bird in the show was won by Miss Ambler’s Black Orpington pullet. This exhibitor also won the North Island Leghorn championship with her White Leghorn hen. Mr. H. M. Barriball’s utility White Leghorn pullet was awarded the challenge cup for the best utility bird in the show; also the cup for the best local bird and the cup for the best bird in Franklin County. Master Owen Hanson, Morrinsville, annexed the North Island championship for Black Rosecomb bantams. Mr. T. Dowthwaite, Avondale, won both specials in Fawn and White Runners. Mr. A. V. Hanson won the special in White Runners and Master H. Ambler special for best Pekin. The Auckland Canary and Cage Bird Club, which is holding its show to-day in the Epihpany Hall, has an entry of over 200 canaries.
