To-Morrow’s Soccer

Championship Games Resumed

Y.M.C.A. to Play Ponsonby

AFTER a three weeks’ break, occupied with the knockout contests, a halt has been called in the cup ties, and the championship series will be resumed. A battle royal should be witnessed at Blandford Park, where the leaders, Ponsonby, meet Y.M.C.A., and will have an opportunity of avenging the Chatham Cup coup de grace. Across the harbour Shore and Northeote meet at Northeote, and Tramways travel to Onehunga.

Ponsonby still holds a useful three points’ load in the senior championship, but is hard pressed by Trams, who have been racing up the ladder with a series of wins. The Young Men have dropped back a little in the championship race, but at the last outing they shocked the Ponies by piling up four goals and knocking the Chatham Cup holders out of this season's contest with comparative ease. Ponsonby failed to produce its best form on that occasion, but will be keen to turn the tables to-morrow. The Y.M. defence is now very sound, and the front a dynamic van which takes a lot of stopping. “TRAM MIES” WILL BE HARD A loss to Ponsonby will threaten its championship supremacy, and the western suburb will be all out to maintain its lead. Tramways fields a very powerful combination now, which has been reinforced by the acquisition of Christie, the burly ex-Thistle centre half. The whole team has freshened up wonderfully since starting very scratchily, and may be within one point of the leaders after to-mor-row’s match with Onehunga on the Manukau ground.

The rival suburbs across the harbour will meet again on the Northeote ground, where Shore, on recent form, should have no difficulty in improving its position on the ladder. The blues have now enlisted the services of the veterans, Bill Palmer and Murray Hayes, who will line out against their old club from Devonport, but after a long absence from the game these former stars have lost some of the scoring capacity they formerly displayed. Belmont will enjoy a wellearned breather with the bye to-mor-row. and this will give its sick patients a chance to recuperate.

The curtain-raiser at Blandford Park will be a lively junior chaijipionship duel between two of the leading teams, Tamaki and Rangers;. Owing to the flooding of the Devonport Cricket Ground with the recent showers, it has been closed for play tomorrow, and the venues of matches set down for decision there have been rearranged.
