BRITAIN OWNS MOST NEW LLOYD’S REGISTER British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Thursday. The new edition of Lloyd’s Register, which has just been issued, contains a most authoritative analysis of the world’s ships. It gives a record of 32.500 vessels, the total tonnage of which is 66,954,659. Of this total, the ships owned in Britain and Ireland account for 19,875,350 tons. Of the world’s steam and motorships, 30.3 per cent, are owned in Britain, the United States being the next largest owner with 21 per cent. Then come Japan. 6.4 per cent.; Germany, 5.7 per cent.; Italy, 5.1 per cent.; Prance. 5 per cent.; Norway, 4.5 per cent.; and Holland, 4.3 per cent.
The total percentage of sailing ships to the world’s tonnage is now only 2.7. Large liners of 15,000 tons and upwards represent only 4.2 per cent, of the world’s tonnage, and of these well over half belong to Britain.
The motor tonnage in the world is 9.1 per cent, of the steam tonnage. Denmark is the largest owner in this category, with 37.9 per cent., which is slightly more than the tonnages of Sweden and Norway.
