“THE SMART SET”

In keeping with the present-day demand for humour, another big laughter programme will bo presented by the Majestic management at that popular rendezvous, the Majestic Theatre. Something new in comedies will be offered in “The Smart Set.” with breezy, irrepressible William Haines in the starring role. As Tommy Van Buren, a gilded and audacious male flower of modern aristocracy, William Haines introduces polo to movie-goers in “The Smart Set.” Of course, he also introduces an exceptionally pretty girl, who hates his conceit and cheek, but who is overjoyed to promise to be his only —always—at the end of a stirring, action-packed stoi-y in which a strong dash of drama adds to the unflagging interest. Abundant thrills, colourful scenes, and many laughable glimpses into the ways of. the sporting set as inimitably portrayed by Haines, make “The Smart Set” one of the best pictures of this year.

In addition to Alice Day, who plays the leading feminine role with skill and girlish charm, Jack Holt and Hobart Bosworth, two famous stars, give fine interpretations of their impoifant featured roles. The rest of the cast have been excellently chosen. Jack Conway, who directed Haines in that great football success, “Brown of Harvard,” and also “Twelve Miles Out,” directed ‘'The Smart Set.” Another attraction will be a return appearance of the Harris Sisters, Mildred and Connie. These two merry melody girls will be seen in an entirely new programme of song and instrumental music. , A musical programme of the same high class for which Mr. WhitefordWaugh’s Majestic Orchestra is renowned, will be given. Music-lovers have only to glance at the list of numbers to realise that a musical feast will be given. Two movements from “Symphony in F. Major” (Beethoven), “Wayside Sketches” (Scotch Minch in), “The Midnight Dream” (SAhlepegrell), “Rustic Revels” (Percy Fletcher), “Owl’s Lament” (Trinkaus), two latest fox-trots, “Didn’t I?” and “Oriental Dream Eyes,” “Die Wuste,” (David), are but a few numbers to be included in the incidental music. As a musical interlude, this talented combination will play selections from “Rio Rita.” The musical programme will also include a flute and clarinet duet, “Dialogue.” A bright suppoi'ting programme will be screened, and will be composed of the ever-popular Majestic News, containing the wor’A' latest pictorial news, an interesting Nature study film, “The Tale of a Dogfish,” and a merry Our Gang comedy, “Sundown Limited,” with the irrepressible youngsters at their funniest.

Columbia are bringing into their fold a splendid assortment of popular stars. Among the players who are appearing in the next six productions to be released by Master Pictures are such imposing names as Hobart Bosworth.
