DESTITUTE MAORIS
TE AKARAWA AND BOARD QUESTION OF RELIEF The plight of destitute Maoris in the Auckland district was considered at last evening’s meeting of Te Akarana Maori Association, following the recent deputation of association members to the Auckland Hospital Board. Maoris were just as much affected by the present economic pressure, it was suggested, as any other section of the community. The old tribal communal system, to a large extent, has passed away, and the Maoris, largely as a result of unemployment, have felt the pinch very considerably this winter.
In order that relief might be obtained in necessitous cases, it was suggested to the board that the association might be consulted concerning destitute Maoris. In many instances association members have an actual knowledge as to whether the cases are deserving or not.
