HIGHWAYS COUNCIL AND BOARD

recommendations rejected (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, To-day. “What is the use of this council? asked Mr. J. Lane, representing Wl'.angaroa, at the meeting of the Xo. 1 District Highways Council at Whangarei this morning.

The meeting was discussing the action of the Main Highways Board in turning down a request for a subsidy of £3 to £1 on the Warkworth-Kai-para Flats Government road. McEnnis. chairman, said the board had also refused to increase the subsidy of £3 for £1 for sandstonmg the Dargavillo to Maungaturoto Road He explained that the road was sometimes covered with water, and a sandstone foundation was essential. Mr. V. Trouson suggested that a £3 to £1 basis could be accepted for consideration if the maintenance was done with free money. The council carried a motion to reiterate the request for free money.
