BUSINESSMEN WILL PAY FOR NEW ROAD

NEWMARKET SCHEME

MAYORS STRONG OPPOSITION ••I shall oppose this scheme absolutely. I consider it one that will oeneht only a small section of the business people. If they want it it shcajld be built at their expense.** This was the attitude of the Mayor, Mr. Du nu Id son at last evenings meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council, after he had read the report •of the legal and finance committee recommending the raising of a special loan of £ 3,G00 for a roadway between Morrow Street and Station Street, near Burke Street. It was further recommended that a special rating area should be formed to carry the charges on the loan. "Would you have any objection,” : asked Cr. S. Gregory, "if these busi- ’ nessmen were willing to pay for it?” The Mayor; No: I would have no objection, if I were satisfied they would | pay for it. I Cr. J. Hardley: We thought that if a special rating area were consti- ; luted and if it were arranged that the j scheme should be carried through : without cost to the borough, your ojjj position would be removed, j The Mayor: I do not believe that : those interested will pay the whole • cost and I still oppose the report.
