A £1,000,000 GIFT
Sir, — An Auckland resident has given away the huge sum of one million pounds toward the establishment of a naval school in England at a time when we hear of the schemes for the outlawry of war and incidentally the elimination of horrors attached thereto. One cannot over-estimate the untold good that would have accrued had that million pounds been given toward the alleviation of unemployment. Subsidised by the Government, € for £, it would have indeed been of invaluable assistance in helping those at present down in their luck to secure work. May I suggest that in future anyone who feels he has a cool million to dispose of should seriously consider whether he could do better than give it toward the relief of unemployment? Surely that would be more humane and appreciated fully by those who really need assistance. FRANK C. REARDON.
