OLD ORDER CHANGETH
MIDDLEMORE IMPROVEMENTS THE NEW CLUB-HOUSE Casual visitors to Middlemore will find that the old order changeth when next they visit the club. At the moment the clubhouse is somewhat of a wreck, and a two-storey edifice is rearing itself up in the ruins.
The alterations are now well under way, and it is expected that they will be completed before the New Zealand ladies’ titles are decided at Middlemore in September. The old dining-room, 19th hole, secretary’s office and kitchen have been demolished and the two-storey struc-
ture is being built on their site. The orange tree which was situated in front of the clubhouse has been shifted nearer the professional’s shop. It took 10 men and a tractor the better part of a day to effect the removal. On the site of the tree there is now under construction a loggia, with a brave front of eight circular columns facing the ISth hole. Above this there will be an open balcony, giving a better view of the links than has been available from the clubhouse previously. The main entrance from the loggia will be into the new dining-room, and above the dining-room there will be a general lounge
In addition to these alterations the verandah beside the putting green has been glassed in, and the accommodation in both sections of the club has been considerably enlarged. There will be no residential facilities.
Middlemore bogey has been reduced from 77 to 75, a step which, at this time of the year, makes the course quite difficult enough to score on. The reduction has been gained by reducing both the 16th and 18th, from 5 to 4.
