DONKEY “ARRESTED"

PARIS POLICE HAVE LIVELY NIGHT A NOISY CHARACTER For disturbing the “public peace” and making a nuisance of itself a 22-year-old donkey was put in gaol at the Commissariat of Police of the Epinette quarter of Paris. The donkey was found wandering by itself in the street in the early hours of the morning, and a policeman who did not know what to do with it brought it to the police station. It was then about 3 a.m. The policeman on duty attached it to the door of the police station, waiting for a suitable hour to take it to the “pound.” Soon the donkey, which probably objected to police interference with its night ramble, began to bray incessantly, and in such a manner that it awoke everybody in the street. Seme good-hearted people came down and gave it sugar, in the hope of keeping it quiet, but having consumed a pound or two of sugar the donkey went on braying more and louder than ever, and a crowd of over 200 people gathered. The situation becoming hopeless, one of the policemen decided to “stable” the donkey in a cell. But the idea of being put in gaol upset the donkey to such an extent that on the way to the cell it began to kick, and demolished a stove and knocked down a table and chairs. The violent animal was finally “locked up.” Later on its master, a rag-picker, who had been looking for it all night, came to fetch it.
