The continued progress of Internal combustion engines Is indicated in Lloyd’s shipbuilding returns for the quarter ending June 30, not only by the fact that 1,500,000 tons of motor-ships are being constructed throughout the world (compared with 1,139,000 tons of steamers) but also that the construction includes 65 motor-ships of 8,000 tons upwards, contrasted with 21 steamers of similar size. The total construction in British shipyards at present it 1,203,000 tons, representing a reduction of 238,000 tons compared with the previous quarter. Britain is now producing 45 per cent, of the world’s ships against 57 per cent, before the war.
