DANGEROUS DRAINAGE

MEDICAL OFFICER DELIVERS ULTIMATUM WHANGARE! WARNED (From, Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Tuesday. The necessity of putting the borough drainage on a serviceable basis was emphasised by Dr. Chesson, district officer of health, Auckland, in a letter received by the Whangarei Borough Council last evening. Dr. Chesson cited cases of overflowing sewers in the Kensington area, and said the position had been brought about entirely by bad workmanship in the first place. The position was a most undesirable one and presented a strong argument for hurrying on the proposed alterations scheme. ‘ There is only one possible remedy/’ says the letter, “and that is the reorganisation of your sewerage scheme, on which you have already received a report from your consulting engineers. It is essential that the work of the remodelling of your sewers should be undertaken with the least possible delay. . . I regard the matter as being so serious that in the event of the ratepayers turning down the scheme I should request the Board of Health to require your council to put the work in hand without further consideration of the ratepayers.” The Mayor remarked that nothing could be done until the new system was put in, and on the motion of Mr. Curtis Dr. Chesson will be advised of the steps taken toward having that accomplished.
