PRINCIPAL’S PLACE

WENT OVER BOARD S HEAD APPOINTMENT AT TRAINING COLLEGE “Ho doesn't know his place,” declared Mr. H. S. W. Iving at to-day s meeting of the Education Board, referring to the action of the Training College principal in suggesting the appointment of a physical instructor to the Director of Education. Mr. King criticised the principal, Mr. H. G. Cousins, for not putting his request through the board first, and for ! going direct to Air. Strong. ‘ At the board's meeting, Air. Cousins | recommended the appointment of a | full-time instructor to the college, saying he had already interviewed AJr. Strong. “The appointments to the college are costing an enormous amount already.” said the chairman, Air. A. Burns. “The staff costs £ 7,095, the new musical instructor gets £5lO and a physical instructor would get from £3OO to £4OO. We recently wanted organising teachers, but they were turned down. On the face of it we cannot ask for the new instructor. There are male and female instructors at the college now. If there is money to spare it should be used to replace the halls which cost us £2,000 to house school children.” Air. King objected to the principal’s action and he moved that his attention should be drawn to the fact that the board has suffered through information being sent direct to Wellington. Air. T. U. Wells said it was quite reasonable for Air. Cousins to discuss things with the Director of Education. Air. King: He does not know his place. “I am quite sure he did not mean any disrespect to the board,” said Air. Wells. Air. F. A. Snell considered that teachers, properly trained in physical science were important. They should be able to give all the instruction necessary in schools. There was a tendency in secondary schools to give tijo children an overdose of physical training through professional instructors. It was decided to decline the recomr mendation. Alessrs. G. Brownlee and E. C. Banks both objected to the suggestion that Air. Cousins should be called to order. Finally Air. King withdrew his motion.
