TOWN-PLANNING LECTURES

AUCKLAND ACTIVITIES WORK OF CITY COUNCIL

On the recommendation of the publicity committee, it was decided by the Auckland Town-planning Association last evening to give a series of lectures in different parts of the city and suburbs on the objects and work of the association. Referring to the efforts made to have th© Railway Department quarry at Mount Albert closed, the chairman, Mr. W. J. Hofdsworth, said he understood a definite promise had been given that the quarry would be closed. The Prime Minister, Mr. Coates, had now advised that he could not find that a promise had been given, but understood the operations would not result in further disfiguration. It was decided to refer the question to the special committee set up to investigate the city’s volcanic cones. In an address on the work of the City Council Town-planning Committee, Mr. S. I. Crookes, chairman of the committee, said an attempt was being made to finalise questions in connection with the work. The completion of the city map, which had been in preparation for some time, was being expedited, so that it could be brought up to date. The question of outlets was an important one, said Mr. Crookes, and special reports had been prepared, with recommendations. The next subject that would be dealt with would be zoning. Following this, information would be obtained regarding the city parks, and then attention would be given to a civic centre.
