FARMER KILLED IN CROSSING SMASH
HAWERA FATALITY Press Association. HAWERA, Sunday. About 6 o’clock last evening, the express train from Wellington collided on the level crossing near Hawera station with a horse-drawn wagon driven by Mr. George Appleyard, a farmer living on the outskirts of the town. Mr. Appleyard was severely injured and died before reaching the hospital. One of the horses was slightly injured, but the other broke away when the engine struck the wagon. The wagon was wrecked and piled up on the cattle-stop. MOTOR-CAR WRECKED FOUR OCCUPANTS ESCAPE Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. In a collision at the Colombo Street railway crossing last evening, between a motor-car and a shunting engine, the front of the motor was badly damaged and the windscreen smashed, but the four occupants escaped injury. The driver of the car saw the cross-ing-keeper’s signal, but his brakes slipped and the car had sufficient momentum to carry it on to .the line.
