Maunga Falls When in Winning Position

GAZE’S IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY KAITI SCORES AGAIN (Special to THE SUN) HASTINGS, Friday. In bitter weather the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter fixture commenced this afternoon, and as a result of a very moderate attendance the totalisator receipts fell from £10,533 a year ago to £9,696. Maunga came to grief when „going well in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase, and Mixed Heather won by the length of the straight from Garzon, the only other starter. R. Reed rode two winners and T. Green one winner, and the pair are now equal at the head of the jockeys’ list. Rangi Sarto Makes Good All started in the Woodlands Steeples. When they were let go Awangawanga went to the front, followed by Progressor and Master Arch. Rounding the far bend Awangawanga was still out from Progressor, Master Arch, Radiate, Rang! Sarto and Peep o’ Day. Progressor fell at the fence at the home bend, and Prince Carol ran off. Passing the stands the first time the order was Awangawanga, Royal Heather, Master Arch, Radiate, Rangi Sarto, Matu and Peep o’ Day. Running along the back the second time Radiate took the lead from Master Arch, Awangawanga, Rangi Sarto, Matu, Royal Heather and Peep o’ Day well back. Rounding the bend Rangi Sarto went up to Radiate, and these two went away from the rest, fighting out a good finish, Rangi Sarto winning by a head, with four lengths between, second and third. Master Arch was fourth. Rangi Sarto won in striking fashion, but Radiate also went well, and Matu can be expected to improve. There were no scratchings in the Whakatu Hurdles* On the rise of the tapes Our Jack went to the front from Mountain Echo and Atareria. xYt the second hurdle Closefire came to grief. Passing the stands for the second time Our Jack was lengths clear of Mountain Echo, Atareria and Patuki. Running along the back the second time Atereria ran up to Our Jack, the pair being a few lengths ahead of Patuki, with Mountain Echo well to the rear. Atereria was over the last fence first

from Patuki and Our Jack, and wqn comfortably by a length and a-half, Our Jack being eight lengths back. This was Atereria’s first win over hurdles, and he scored very easily, though not impressively.

At a Fine Price The Hawke’s Bay I-lurdles was a good thing for Gaze. Troilus showed out for the first furlong, then Peneus took charge from Troilus, Gaze and Ballyfarnon. Thus they ran round the bend and into the straight the first time, the order then being Peneus, Troilus, Braeman. Gaze and Ballyfarnon. When they entered the back stretch again the pace was put on and Gaze moved up, and six furlongs from home headed Peneus, and jumping beautifully kept his position. Gaze was well clear at the turn for home from Ballyfarnon, Peneus, Troilus and Braeman. Gaze cleared the last obstacle without trouble and went on to win in a canter by four lengths, three lengths between second and third. Peneus was fourth. Braeman fell at the last hurdle. Lucky Mixed Heather The Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase was an easy thing for Mixed Heather. He went to the front at the rise of the barrier and kept about 20 lengths ahead of Maunga, with Garzon the same distance back. At the back fence the last time round Maunga fell just as he was about to collar the leader, leaving Mixed Heather a furlong in front of Garzon. Mixed Heather jumped well and won by the length of the straight. Maunga was taken out again and com 7 pleted the course to get third money. King Mart Scores A good field of 15 faced the starter in the Winter Handicap. When they settled down Essential, Grand National and King Mart were leading a bunched lot. Running down the back Grand National was just clear of Martona, Essential, King Mart and Le Champ. Rounding .the far bend Merle had taken charge from Jen, Martona, King Mart, Royal Elm, Essential and Pale Star. Jen was the first to turn for home from King Mart, Pale Star and Martona, the others being bunched. Tliero was a good race to the post, King Mart winning by a length, two lengths between second and third. Clavers was fourth. King Mart won in good style and is a much improved horse. Fee Simple Beats Dishonoured Dishonoured was a warm favourite for the Hastings Handicap, and Argue and Fee Simple had no end of friends. Dishonoured was not well drawn at the barrier, but soon rushed to the front. Then Takutaraa moved up, and these two, Argue and Brown Sugar led to the straight from Fee Simple. Fee Simple and Dishonoured fought out the finish, Fee Simple winning by three-quarters of a length. Takutama was a good third, and was not luck3 r in the running. Rory Mor was fourth. A Hot One The public would have little else

than Kaiti in the Heretaunga Handicap. The favourite was in front when the field settled down, and was followed into the straight by Epistle, with Huikai handy.
