R.S.A. ANNUAL FUNCTION Tho Papakura Returned Soldiers held their ninth annual ball in the Paragon Theatre on Thursday evening. There was a fairly good attendance and an enjoyable evening ensued. FOR CHURCH FUNDS There was a good attendance at St. John’s Hall on Thursday, when the women members of the Ohakune Church gave a “coin afternoon” in aid of the forthcoming bazaar. The afternoon’s programme consisted of items, games and competitions, the latter being won by Mrs. Asford and Mrs. Collier.

CHURCH BAZAAR

AND FANCY FAIR There were good attendances at both sessions of the fancy fair, held in St. Andrew's Hall, Station Road, Otahuhu, on Thursday afternoon and evening. The proceeds will be devoted to the mission work in connection with the church. Stalls were erected in the hall and good business was the general report at the close of the function. During the evening a musical programme was given by members and friends of the church, and it included an exhibition of Highland dancing, with bagpipe accompaniment. Stall-holders were:—Cake stall: Mesdam.es Russell, Morten and Ellis; produce stall, Mesdaraes Moffat, Crawford and Cameron; sw T eets and jumble stall, Sunday School scholars; fancy work stall, Miss Wingate and Mrs. Pinhey; tearooms, Mrs. Croy and Miss Kelly.

FAREWELL FUNCTION The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Allen met at the Presbyterian Church in Ohakune on Monday to wish them farewell before their departure for Paeroa, where Mr. Allen has been transferred. An enjoyable programme was presented, consisting of games and competitions, and items were given by Mr. F. W. Pearce, Mr. and Mrs. McGregor, Mr. L. Adams and Mrs. Sargisson. The competitions were won by Mrs. Sargisson and Mr. Delvin. During the evening the Rev. T. Shilton expressed regret that Mr. and Mrs. Allen were leaving the district, and eulogised them for the work they had done on behalf of the church. For several years Mrs. Allen had been secretary of the church and her services would be greatly missed. On behalf of the members of the church Mr. Shilton asked Mr. and Mrs. Allen to accept a handsome salad bowl. Mr. McGregor spoke very highly of .the guests of the evening.

KINDERGARTEN FOR OTAHUHU

ARRANGEMENTS PROCEEDING At a meeting of the recently-ap pointed committee, to further the arrangements for establishing a kindergarten school in Otahuhu, it was decided to hold the school in St. Andrew’s Hall, Station Road, during the mornings. The kindergarten will be non-sectarian in nature. Mrs. H. R. Archdall presided, and Mrs. Luscombe was appointed secretary. Final details will be arranged at a meeting of mothers and other interested persons, to be held on July 11. when an address will be delivered by Mrs. C. E. Maguire on “Child Welfare.” W.C.T.U. NEWS The Ponsonby branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union held its meeting yesterday afternoon, when the president, Mrs. Lee Cowie. was in the chair. Major Annie Gordon, of the Salvation Army, gave interesting addresses on her social work for 42 years, and stressed the evils of young girls drinking. COMING-OF-AGE PARTY Mr. Claude Hyauiason was the guest of honour at a delightful party given by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Hyauiason, in the Foresters’ Theatre, Onehunga, this week, in celebration of his 21st birthday. Blue and gold streamers and . potted palms gave the hall an artistic appearance, and hundreds of oalioons that were released from a large hoop in the centre of the room caused much amusement. The Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, was present, and proposed the health of the guest of honour, and Mr. T. U. Pardington presented him with an outsize in keys. Music for the dancing was provided by Mainland’s Orchestra, and Mr. Muston and Miss Halpin contributed several enjoyable items during the evening. Mrs. Hyauiason, who welcomed the guests, wore a smart gown of moonmist blue ring velvet, with rhinestone embroidery. Miss Irene Hyauiason was wearing a panne velvet frock of leaf-green toning, with silver relief. Miss Ida Cowley (Ohaupo), wore a dainty frock of betty blue taffeta, trimmed with pink rosebuds.
