CROSSING DANGER WILL BE LESSENED

ALARUM FOR ARGYLE ST. ADVICE FROM MR. COATES Argyle Street crossing, Morningside, is to have much of its menace alleviated with the provision by the Railway Department of an automatic alarum. This safeguard is the result of negotiations with the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, by the New Zealand Natives’ Association, Auckland. The association notified Mr. Coates of its resolution on June 6 to ask the Government to take immediate steps to have the crossing flagged in view of the continued danger to life. It was further suggested that employment be given one or two disabled soldiers at the crossing. On June 11, Mr. Coates notified his intention of referring the request for consideration to the general manager of the Railway Department, and in additional correspondence dated June 20, made this statement: “The department has decided to provide an automatic alarum at the Argyle Street crossing and the work in connection with the installation will be put in hand at an early date.” Referring to the association’s request that crossing-keepers be appointed, the Prime Minister said that there were other crossings at which the need for protection of this nature was much more urgent and under such conditions he regretted that the request could not be favourably considered. The association has acknowledged the decision, stating its gratification that danger is to be lessened at a crossing where there has already been loss of life.
