JOCKEY REED HAS BIG DAY

FOUR WINNERS AT TRENTHAM MARLBOROUGH’S FINE OPENING (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Saturday. Ideal weather favoured the autumn meeting of the Marlborough Racing Club, held this year at Trentham. The course was in fair order, being a bit slow. The attendance was large, with the result that the totalisator put through £30,284|, and this sum alone should ensure the Marlborough Club a profit on the fixture. On the first day at Waterlea, Blenheim, 12 months ago, the machine handled £6,83.7 —a vast difference! A feature of the day’s racing was the successful riding of Roy Reed, who was in his very best form. He had seven mounts, and he punched home four winners, being second in three

other races. But for striking trouble at several stages of the journey, he might have won the big event of the day, the Waterlea Cup, on Oratrix. Notes on the racing and details of concluding results follow: Favourite Unlucky In a fair pool in the First Hack Hurdles, Olympic was the choice of bettors, with Bonhomme, Polyphemus and Modern well supported. Lady Passenger was soon in front, but over the later stages Bonhomme and Modern were the leaders. The pace was slow and Polyphemus sprinted past the leaders in the straight to win by three lengths from Panorama, who beat Lady Passenger a head, with Modern, Bonhomme and Olympic next. Olympic would have done a lot better had he been allowed to run to the front as he was pulling hard. The Novices Inflame and the southern-owned Waihemo carried over half the money on the Novice Stakes. Inflame was first into the straight, but did not stay, and Freeze Out beat him home by half a length. Tatrina was a fair third, Second Thoughts fourth and Wailiemo last. An Easy Win Of the four who contested the Railway Hack Handicap, Court Jester was favourite. Borsalene went to the front at the start and led into the straight from Holus Bolus and beat him home by two lengths, with Court Jester another two lengths away third, and Vexatious last. Vesperus’s Surprise There was a fine contest for the Waterlea Cup, in which Vesperus was responsible for a mild surprise. They left to a good start, and entering the badk stretch Vesperus and Ring Boy were in the van. Passing the mile post Ring Boy led Vesperus, Twink, Joy Bird, Oratrix, Lady Gay and Beaumont, the field stringing out considerably as they raced down the stretch. At the five furlongs Ring Boy was still making play from Vesperus, Joy Bird, Lady Gay, Twink. Kilmiss and Oratrix, with Beaumont last. Ring Boy and Vesperus were first into the straight, with Oratrix coming fast on the outer and Kilmiss making a dash at the false rail. Vesperus stuck it out to win fairly comfortably by half a length from Oratrix, with Ring Boy two lengths off third. r The winner paid a good price. Royal Duke at Last There were nine runners in the Juvenile Handicap, in which Royal Duke wound up a good favourite over Stanchion. The favourite, Dancing Star and Stanchion, were the early leaders, Royal Duke being clear as the field hit the course proper, with Stanchion a,nd Roi de Val both prominent at the head of the others. Once in line, Royal Duke gave nothing else the

ghost of a show, winning by three lengths untjer a strong pull. The little-fancied Roi de Val and Stanchion had an interesting set-to for second money, the former getting to the judge a neck in front. Tcheka finished well into fourth place. The winner showed promising form in the spring, when he sprang a-jsurprise victory at Trentham in a fine field, but since then had failed consistently. Now he appears to have returned to form. Bracketed Horse Scores Scratch ings heavily reduced the starters in the Opawa Hack Handicap. Kindle and Keddar, who were bracketed, were favourites. Fallow led for a w’hile, but Billion showed the way into the straight from Keddar, with Maui last. Maui finished well, but Keddar was half a length to the good at the finish. Billion was a fair third and Kindle fourth. The Sprinters First Acre? and Kilperon were well backed for the open sprint contest, the Autumn Handicap. Quantum and Singlespear led on to the course proper, where Kilperon came through and won by half a length from First Acre, who beat Royal Ceres by a neck. Singlespear was fourth. • Royal Ceres was unlucky early in the running, and should soon do better. First Acre will be all the better for the racing he has had. for he appears to be coming right back to form. Three in a Line A great finish resulted in the Beaver Hack Handicap, in which Helotis led all the way. Catkin and Moutoa Wonder crossed the line on terms with her, and the judge declared a dead heat bc-

tween Catkin and Helotis, with Moutoa Wonder third and Mark Mint fourth.
