RETURNED SOLDIERS MEET FUNCTION AT—QTAHUHfcP Over 100 members of the Otaliuliu Returned Soldiers’ Social Club attended their third annual smoke concert held on Saturday evening. The president. Padre C. B. W. Seton, presided. Among the guests present was Mr. R. B. Todd, Mayor of Otahuhu. The chairman accorded a hearty welcome to tlie guests and members, and reported the result of the club’s Poppy Day appeal. The gathering stood in silence for one minute as a mark of respect to their fallen comrades. The secretary reported that the year had ended with a credit balance of £2O, and 14 cases of hardship had been assisted. During the evening the president presented the cup, won by Mr. J. Uaslip, at the club's annual sports gathering; and an enjoyabi9 musical programme was given by the following: Songs, Messrs. Pelham. J. Hall. Dale, May, J. O’Brien, Clark; elocutionary item, Mr. Ned Fort. OPOTIKI NEWS COUNCILLORS APPOINTED Nominations closed on Saturday W two vacancies on the Opotiki County Council caused by the resignations of Messrs. J. M. Butler and F. C. Parkinson. For the coast riding, which Mr. Butler had represented, Mr. W. G. Saxby's was the only nomination, and for the Waioeka riding the only nominee was Mr. F. C.
