NEW REGENT
TWO FEATURE FILMS “Chang,” an astounding drama of the jungle, will be shown for three more days at the New Regent Theatre. It is a story of life spent in waging war against the jungle. Time and again progress is made, and fields and homes hacked out. “Always the jungle rose in its wrath and swallowed them.” Such is the tale of “Chang.” A story of man’s fight for existence, a fight that is life itself, stark, real, almost unbelievable. The little clearing becomes a home, the beasts are beaten off or killed, and then comes peace! For a day . . . perhaps for a month . . . perhaps a year? But not for long. Man is the intruder, fighting the jungle. From the beginning until the end of time it stretchest—the unconqviered—the unconquerable.
The second feature on the programme is “The Woman On Trial,” starring Pola Negri. The theme of the story concerns the sacrifices a woman makes in the name of love. Caring deeply for one man who is deathly ill, she weds another to obtain money to restore the first to health. When her child by the loveless marriage is taken from her through a jealous and deceitful scheme, she runs true to the instincts of wpman and motherhood to regain the happiness of which she has been cheated. The Regent Review is extremely interesting this week as it contains several scenes of the arrival of Bert Hinkler in Australia, as well as other interesting incidents in other parts of the world. Mr. Leslie V. Harvey at the Wurlitzer was responsible for an innovation that won much appreciation. A film of his actual working of the Wurlitzer was shown, while he himself played the instrument, sub-titles explaining the reason for everything he does. He also played the ‘Kashmiri Song.” The Regent Orchestra, as usual, contributed a highly entertaining musical programme under Mr. Maurice Guttridge.
