END OF YACHTING SEASON

Combined Club Racing Sees Mediocre Finale NUMEROUS MISHAPS OCCUR FOR the most part there were mediocre fields of starters in the combined cruising and harbour yacht races held on Saturday afternoon when the boating season on the Waitemata was officially closed. A cold sou’west breeze with intermittent rain-squalls made racing conditions anything but ideal. A number of mishaps to the large as well as the small yachts occurred during the racing.

In the event for M class, Maia. owned by Mr. A. Robb, capsized off the cable depot. Her crew of five were rescued by the launch Duchess. Later in the afternoon the V class boat Magic, owned by Mr. H. Bennett, also turned over below Devonport Wharf. A hire launch picked up the crew. Not long after the start of the L class race, Valeria, which on the previous Saturday, dead-heated for the Lipton Cup, was dismasted near Devonport. The keel yacht Little Jim broke her gaff and Ariki carried away her rudder. A strong wind was blowing at the timp and the big clipper drifted on to a mudbank near Cheltenham. She was eventually towed to her moorings. Keel yachts, mullet boats and launches contested cruising races to Islington Bay. All smaller craft raced within harbour limits. Details of the racing are as follow: A and B Classes Nine first and second-class keel yachts lined up for the start at 2.20 p.m. A very ragged start was seen. Kotiri was first to respond to gunfire. Nga-Toa was close in attendance, with Rangi near-by. Thelma, lorangi, Little Jim, Ariki, Waione and Victory followed in open formation. The wind was gusty, but several boats set their spinnakers, though the majority preferred to race without the trouble of the extra sail. Wind-ward was 2m 51s late. Ladye Wilma came along 16m late. Finishing times were:—Thelma, 4.32.27; lorangi, 4.33.23; Nga-Toa, 4.40.10; Kotiri, 4.50.8; Victory, 4.51.57; Waione, 5.4.15; Rangi, 5.6.3; Windward, 5.19.17. Little Jim and Ariki did not finish. C and E Classes The third and fourth-class keel boats were not numerous, only six competitors putting in an appearance. Alexa responded first to gunfire, with Delville near by. Maybelle, lona, Wairiki and
