MANAWATU’S FINAL DAY | MANDANE AND MISS PAT SCORE (Special to THE SUN l PALMERSTON N., Thursday. ] The Manawatu autumn meeting concluded to-day in brilliant weather. The | totalisator handled £22,689, making I £47,030, an increase of £1,755 over; last year. Vexatious in Form Mount Marta Avas backed as a good thing in the Kairunga Hurdles, and ran a good race. Whisogne Avent to the front at the start, out through the straight Mount Marta Avas in charge from Whisogne, Bonecto, Ngata and Kilburn. Kilburn moved up along the back, and so did Braeman, and at the lialf-milc the order of the leaders Avas Kilburn, Mount Marta, Vexatious, Ngata and Braeman. Vexatious finished best and won by a length from Mount Marta, Avitli Braemar a neck back third and Kilburn, Ngata, Chrissarto and Airtight next. Favourites Start a Run Moa Bird was favourite for the Lockwood Handicap,, in which Vigilance also was Avell backed. Moa Bird duly Avon, his success being the prelude to a Avinning sequence of favourtes. Callanmore and Le Champ made* the early running from Orcades, Desert Lad and Vigilance, Avith Moa Bird Avell back. Moa Bird went round the field, and gradually making up ground was lying fifth at the turn for home, where Callanmore still had charge from Le Champ. Moa Bird Avent on well to just win from the fast-finishing Moutea Wonder, Avith Callanmore two lengths aAvay third, Orcades fourth and Desert Lad fifth. Mandane in Great Betting Race The Tamatete Handicap was a great betting race, in Avhich Mandane wound up favourite, only a little better backed than several others. Mask began well, and with Mandane and Tresham led through the straight. Vivo then took charge and led into the back stretch with a big break on Mask, Mandane, CroAvn Area, Tresham and Hynanna. At the home turn Vivo was showing the way to Mandane, Hynanna, Addlepate, Mask and Tresham. The finish Avas exciting, Mandane getting the verdict by a neck from Hynanna, with Tresham a good third and CroAvn Area, Mask and Limosa next. An Easy Win Royal Damon and Duke Abbey were favourites for the Stonyhurst Handicap, which was a fine race. Duke Abbey, Lin Arlington, Paul Lucerne and Whenuanui were the early leaders, with Royal Damon close behind them and Kilperon net far away, while The Swell was a long way back. Lin

Arlington and Duke Abbey led Royal Damon to the straight, but there the top-Aveight asserted himself and went away to win with ridiculous ease by several lengths from Kilperon, who finished well enough to beat Duke Abbey by a long head. Huikai Avas fourth and Lin Arlington fifth. At a Short Price The public went heavily for CimaDue in the Manawatu Stakes, and lie pulled them through nicely. Miss Ransom and Raasay were in front most of the way, with Freehold and Cimabue next and The HaAvk last. Cimabue Avas in behind the leaders at the bottom of the straight, and as soon as he Avas called on he came away and Avon easily by a length from The Hawk, who put in a great finishing run and cut Raasay out of second money. Tliuav was fourth and Freehold last. Juvenile to High Disdain The Cloverlea Nursery saAV the Jiawera filly Silver Rule sent out a good favourite, Avith fair backing for Knightlike (Avith Avliom Connoisseur Avas bracketed). Concentrate, lvaihoro. High Disdain and Briar Root. High Disdain and lvaihoro began best and Avere folloAved early in the piece by Concentrate, Knightlike, Silver Rule and Ridgemount. lvaihoro had a small lead of Ridgemount and High Disdain at the home turn, Avitli Silver Rule next, and. after a great struggle down the straight High Disdain Avon by a good head from Kaihoro, who was tAvo lengths ahead of Concentrate, with Briar Root and Silver Rule close up next. Miss Pat at Good Odds Arrow Ladi carried most support in the Borough Handicap, and Broad Acre, Benzoin and Vast Acre were evenly backed to a slightly lower degree. Vast Acre began smartly, but so did several others, and Silvermine. Kaiti, Dobbin and Broad Acre were with her in the first portion of the contest. Silvermine was the first to turn for home and was closely followed by Broad Acre, Kaiti and Benzora, but then Miss Pat came from the back, and cutting down the Avhole field Avon nicely by ft length from Vast Acre. avUo was three-quarters of a length in front of Silvermine, next being First Acre and Broad Acre. A Close Finish The meeting concluded with the Adderstone Handicap, for Avhicli Flying Shot Avas favourite. Flying Shot led Hypnotic and a bunched field to the straight, and from there to the post a great finish ensued, Flying Shot winning by a head from Aropeta and Hypnotic, Avho dead-heated for second place.
