Soccer’s Second Round

PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW

Some Open Contests

THE second games of the senior Soccer championship will be staged to-morrow afternoon, and all other grades -will start the first round, which means that some 1,500 round-ball enthusiasts will be hard <j,t it. The principal attraction will be at Blandford Park where Y.M.C.A. meets Northcote in the preliminary game, and North Shore v. Tramways will he the principal contest. Both matches should provide exciting games, and the first appearance of these four clubs at headquarters should prove a big attraction. Ponsonby journeys to Onehunga to meet the home club, and Belmont has a stiff task in opposing Thistle on the Domain.

The curtain-raiser at Blandford Park should find the Young Men and Northcote very evenly matched teams and both will have benefited by last Saturday’s hard struggles and the training operations since. Y.M. brought off a surprise last Saturday at Devonport by downing Shore on its own domain for the first time in three seasons. In Humphreys, Grant, Hoban and Dick the Young Men have a lively front line, which is save to worry opponents with its breakaways and shock tactics. Hoban is one of the fastest wing forwards in Auckland, and Grant, the newest recruit from Home, gave a very impressive display last week. Grant has firstclass credentials from Lancashire and Scotland, and is likely to prove a strong scoring factor in the Y.M. van this winter. On paper the Y.M. defence is not too strong, but Paton in goal is a tower of strength, and Otter’s return will reinforce the last line. The backs put up a sterling defence against the Shore attack last week, keeping the score to a solitary goal.

Northcote has wisely decided on a policy of promoting its own good juniors, in preference to scouting for outside recruits who are not always reliable, and the form the Blues displayed against Tramways last Saturday was distinctly encouraging. Although narrowly beaten by the odd goal in five, ’Cote’s exhibition showed that when the team settles down it should be a big improvement on last year’s eleven. In Lyon, Hubbert and Taylor, the strawberry-growers have a very solid last line of defence, and Meek is a promising half. Williams and Welborne form a strong wing, and the opening game should be a. good struggle. SHORE v. TRAMWAYS

Tramways were not at full strength last week owing to the demands of race day traffic, but will field a solid team to-morrow. The corporation men were disappointing in the championship series la-st winter, but made amends by settling all opposition in the senior knock-outs for the Falcon trophy. In a friendly trial at Devonport during the Easter holidays the Trammies proved too good for their younger opponents, and are very confident of retrieving some of the 1926 laurels this season. There are no new recruits in the ranks of the Green and Blacks, but some of the veterans have freshened up remarkably and Shore will have to be all out to win.

Shore made a disastrous start last week, when the front line was disorganised by Tipton going lame at the kick-off. and the other four forwards found Paton in goal an almost impassable obstacle in their aim for the net. Weak finishing in front of goal cost Shore several points last winter, and the Black and Gold brigade have long been lacking a forward with shooting boots which can bag goals. The return of Bradshaw and Walters should stimulate the attack to-mor-row, and Shore are trying out a new custodian in Alf. Smith (one of the “Shore Smiths”). He is a promising colt in the Permanent Force, who played well for Seatoun when stationed at Wellington last winter, and is a bellicose type of keeper, who does not hesitate to get into the thick of a melee to guard his citadel, and Shore defence should be hard to pierce tomorrow. With the ground in firstclass order the game should prove a ! hard battle for the. winning points, with a thrilling tussel between two evenly-matched teams of fast and clever players. PONSONBY v. ONEHUNGA Onehunga will open its home season with a match against the Ponies, who played distinctly below farm last Saturday. Onehunga was too good for Belmont, but will need to be still better to lower the Ponies’ colours tomorrow. Last Saturday's game should have a good effect on Onehunga's team work; the form of the Manukau men suggested that they have all the material for a match-winning combination. Ponsonby’s display in the second half last week was a mystery, which perhaps the selectors and -trainer have solved during the week, and the men from the western suburb will be keen to make amends for the shock the supporters received in the opening match. THISTLE v. BELMONT The Scots would appear to have a “soft thing” on in meeting the Belmont Old Boys, but there is always a spice of uncertainty about Soccer, and a team going on the field in a careless mood sometimes suffers a shock. Two seasons ago North cote a surprising habit of stopping the Thistle whenever the two met, and Belmont may try to emulate its older neighbours against the formidable rivals to-morrow. On last Saturday’s form the new recruits to major rank are scarcely tip to senior standard, but there, is talk of the team being strengthened by the inclusion of some more experienced players. Thistle may take the opportunity of trying out Whitley, the Shore junior, who played some dashing games last year and ] impressed the Thistle backs with his | ability to mix matters with the best < of them in a willing go. .
