NEW FERRY SERVICE.— In certain quarters an impression appeal's to exist that, apart from isolated instances, motor vessels are unsuitable for comparatively short, fast services intended lor passenger-carrying and adhering to strict time schedules. Although it has been proved in practice that such an impression is quite erroneous, considerable prejudice is allowed to predominate in favour of steamers, which still maintain, for example, the Irish and crossChannel sei'vices. This is a matter of particular interest to people locally, in view of the decision ot the Union Company to construct a new ship for the W T ellington-Lyttelton ferry service. Dealing with the subject, “The Motor Ship” goes on to state that when the motor vessels of Jylland and Parkeston made their respective appearances on the Harwich- Esbjerg route there were few of the more progressive among those interested in passenger ship services at Home who failed to acknowledge the enterprising policy of the owners. Likewise, the Adelaide S.S. Co., will be dulv credited for their initiative in taking delivery of the 31. S. Minnipa. This ship will engage in a fast all-night service between Adelaide and Port Lincoln. She is scheduled to leave each night at about 7 o'clock, being due to arrive at her destination the following day at 6 a.m., carrying 212 passengers. Extensive first class passenger accommodation is provided, the Minnipa being a one-class ship. Great care has obviously been exercised to ensure the comfort of the passengers. even to the extent of providing a number of shower baths in addition to the ordinary bath-rooms. As regards the cleanliness and convenience of the ship, this is, of course, a foregone conclusion with the elimination of coal-fired boilers and steam engines. It mav be added that the Adelaide S.S. Co. have already in commission a motor cargo vessel (the 31. S. Mulcra), while a third oil-engined ship is in course of completion. The hull and engines were built by Durmeister and Wain, and she has a gross tonnage of 1977.
