WAITOMO CAVES ROAD

REPAIRS BADLY WANTED A.A.A. ACTIVITIES The bad condition of the road to Waitomo Caves is to be brought to the notice of the Tourist Department. At last evening’s meeting of the council of the Auckland Automobile Association it was reported that the road is at present in a very bad state, which must have the effect of severely restricting tourist traffic. There is no immediate possibility of the road being repaired by the local controlling body, as it is unable to find even the small amount necessary to secure a subsidy from the Main Highways Board, which has offered £3 for £l. The opinion was very strongly expressed by members of the council of the Auckland Automobile Association that the responsibility for upkeep should rest with the Government Tourist Department, as the road is used solely by traffic bound for the Caves. If the department will assist the county to secure the Main Highways Board’s subsidy of £3 for £l, the road could be put in excellent order, and one of New Zealand’s most famous scenic resorts made easily accessible, as It should be. NEW ASSOCIATION ROOMS The secretary of association notified the council that he had definitely secured the rooms for the association’s new offices, which were authorised at the last meeting. The rooms are on the first floor of the same building at present occupied, but much more commodious than the present offices.
