Wellington Meeting Goes On At Trentham

THE HAWK BACK TO FORM (Special to THE SUN,' WELLINGTON, Monday. rE Wellington Racing Club’s summer fixture was continued to-day at Trentham. The weather was fine and the attendance large. The totalisator returns totalled £75,692 for the day, compared with £78,943 on the middle day last year, a decrease of £3,251.

HIS FIRST VICTORY A START was made with the Mungaroa High-weight, Thurnbell £2,228, being a warm favourite, with fair support for Beauty Light £1,401, Airtight £l,lBO, Greengrocer £1,164. Rounding the bend out of the straight Lady Gay went to the front, showing the way into the back stretch to Rotowhero, Thurnbell and Beauty Light. At the five furlongs the favourite moved up to second place behind Lady Gay, close up being Airtight and Panorama, with Rotowhero, Greengrocer and Beauty Light next. -There was little between Lady Gay, Thurnbell, Greengrocer, Panorama and Airtight as they came into the straight, but here Greengrocer made a fine run on the outer and outpaced the field to win his first race in convincing fashion. A head separated Thurnbell and Lady Gay, while three lengths away were Airtight and Beauty Light together., Rotowhero next, and Panorama last. A SURPRISE PACKET

The Hastings-trained Kahu Araki sprang a big surprise in the Trial Plate, winning easily after leading the greater part of the way and returning a price running well over a third of a century. Golden Armour £2,960 and Keddar £2,118 monopolised the market, anything outside this pair being at good odds. An indifferent start saw High Heather first away from Amor, Keddar and Golden Armour, but at the end of of 'a couple of furlongs Kahu Araki was running clear of Amor, with High Heather, Keddar, Qolden Armour, Court Jester and Spearmiss following. Kahu Araki was still clear into the home turn, his nearest attendants being Amor, High Heather, Court Jester, Keddar, and Golden Armour. Nothing had a chance with the the leader in the run in, the outsider winning easily by four lengths. Keddar finished stronger than Golden Armour, th© pair being separated by a neck. Spearmiss was going strongly at the end in fourth place, next in order being High Heather, Ampr, Greencloth, Court Jester, Aro de Val, Mark Mint and Sneerer. The last three, together with the winner, were slow out of the barrier. LE CHOUCAS MAKES AMENDS Le Choucas, who was unlucky on Saturday, made amends in the January Handicap, in which h© was a good favourite with £1,597, but the betting took a wide range, and he was at a nice price. Others to be backed were Nincompoop £842, Hynanna £B3B, and Thorndale £7Bl. A bad start saw Damaris and Assurance badly left. Gala Day going out fast from Horomea, Rascal, Royal Damon, Alyson, Le Choucas, Lausanne and Front Rank. At the end of a fur-

long Front Rank ran up to Gala Day, and the pair led across the top and into the straight attended by Royal Damon. Alyson, Le Choucas, Lausanne and Damaris, who made a fast run from the half mile. Going on the outside of Cerf at the false rail, Le Choucas shot up on the inside, and while there was an exciting struggle going on behind, he went away to score by the best part of a couple of lengths. Ther© was a big bunch fighting out the minor places, an outsider in Vertigern getting second a head in front of Overhaul, who came strongly in the straight. Alyson, Thorndale, Gala Day and Front Rank were together in a heap close up, and the next were Damaris, Royal Damon and Hynanna.

GOBLIN MARKET WINS EASILY Nine contested the Nursery Handicap, which resulted in a decisive win for Goblin Market. Consent £1,794, Concentrate £1,782, Goblin Market £1,399 and High Disdain £l,lßl, carried most money, and the best-backed trio filled the places. At the start Tcheka nearly knocked over Concentrate, who was slow to get going. Stanchion was quickly in front of impertinence, but at the half-way Consent was in the van and showed the Stanchion was quickly in front of Impertinence, Stanchion, who ran very wide, Pari, Australis, Concentrate and Goblin Market. At. the false rail Concentrate was badly interfered with, and at the furlong post Goblin Market was in the van and, finishing nicely, went on to win by three lengths from Concentrate, who was only a head in advance of Consent. Australis was close up fourth, with High Disdain, Pari, Tcheka, Impertinence and Stanchion in that order.

GREEN JUST MISSES HAT TRICK All started in the Racing Club Handicap, for which Set Sail £2,482, was made a big favourite, with Pink Note £1,773, Oratrix £1,513, Mask £1,435 and Laughing Prince £1,315 also well supported. In the rush for positions out of the straight Bennanee set out to make a solid pace, and going into the back straight was four lengths ahead of Set Sail, with Laughing Prince and Pink Note two lengths back, and at intervals were Ring Boy, Countersign, Joy Bird, David Garrick, with Mask tailing the field. At the five furlongs, Bennanee was five lengths clear in front of Set SaiL with Pink Note and Laughing Prince handy, and Countersign, Joy Bird, Ring Boy, David Garrick and Oratrix next. Crossing the top Mask made a move from the rear, Bennanee turning for home a couple of lengths in advance of Set Sail, with Pink Note,

Laughing Prince right up, and Ring Boy, Joy Bird and Oratrix follpwing. Approaching the furlong post Laughing Prince, Set Sail and Pink Note were running neck and neck, and the three-year-old was the first to weaken, the other pair going on to fight out a desperate finish, Set Sail winning a hard race by a head. Laughing Prince was two and a-half lengths back, with Countersign a very good fourth. Mask encouraged his backers by getting up fifth, when last three and a-half furlongs from home. The next to finish were O.ratrix, David Garrick, Novar and Bennanee, with Joy Bird and Ring Boy the last two. OUTSIDER WINS DOURO CUP Some Lad was the sole defection from the rich Douro Cup, a fine field of 17 going to the post. The result was a very rough race, which was even a bigger surprise than that sprung by Kahu Araki, the winner, Wayward, paying a dividend exceeding half a century. Goshawk- £2,157, Lady Limond £1,925, The Swell £1,064, Arikiwai £938, Keddar-Kindle bracket £853 and Blimp £778 carried most money in a big pool. A great start saw Blimp the first to show out. from Goshawk, Lady Limond, Wayward, Polydectes, King Midas, The Swell, and Arikiwai. At the end of three furlongs Lady Limond had gone to the. front, being followed at this stage by Wayward. Blimp, King Midas, Goshawk, The Swell, Polydectes, Arikiwai and Catkin. There was little alteration crossing the top, with Arikiwai making a run on the outside. Lady Limond was still in the van into the straight from Wayward, with Arikiwai and Polydectes close up, and King Midas, The Swell, Catkin and Goshawk following. All the way up the running it was a stirring finish, with plenty of interference, Goshawk and Ganymede being suffers. Half a furlong from the judge Wayward asserted himself, and won by almost a length. Keddar got up on the rails to get second money, but The Swell was with him, and there was nothing between them. Arikiwai, too, was right up, and Lady Limond a good fifth, followed ,by Catkin, Goshawk, Polydectes, Spean Bridge, Capitulation, Merle and Bronstell next in order. POPULAR WIN FOR THE HAWK Three withdrawals left a field of eight in the open sprint, the Metropolitan Handicap. Eulalie £2,055, Money Order £1,787, Aussie £1,636, Good as Gold £1,128, and The Hawk £l,lOl carried the money. Covent Garden dwelt slightly at the start, Good as Gold and Limited being the first away. They were attended by Covent Garden and Eulalie at the end of the first furling, with Aussie, Money Order and Royal Ceres the last three. Coming on to the course proper, Covent Garden and Good as

Gold were together, ahead of Limited, Eulalie and Aussie, the last two participating in a scrimmage on the rails. In a good finish The Hawk came on to score a popular wijj from Aussie by a length and a-half, with Limited a couple of lengths away third. Money Order, who was off the course at the turn, was a good fourth, with Eulalie, Good as Gold and Royal Ceres next. BILLIKINS ALL THE WAY Broad Acre was a good first choice in the Camp Handicap, for which Billikins, Addlepate and Dimmer were also well supported, there being little between them on the machine. Billikins got out well from the barrier and led on to the course proper, attended by Broad Acre, Sky Quest, Starflight, Bronstell and* Quantum. Contrary to first day’s running, Billikins ran on well and lasted long enough to get the decision from Starflight by a length. Bronstell was three lengths away third and then followed Sky Quest, Camisader, Dimmer and Broad- Acre.
