MANUKAU COUNTY
PUBLIC POUND TENDERS ACCEPTED - Motor traffic during the holidays had been very, heavy on many county roads especially those giving access to beaches, reported Mr. jr. R. Page, the engineer, to the Manukau County Council to-day. An unusual amount of maintenance had been necessary to combat the heavy wear and tear. Tenders have - been invited for the construction of Smith’s Bridge and Mill Road Bridge in the Papakura Riding. Works scheduled for early attention in the Papakura Riding include metalling on the Alfriston-Papakura Road, and repairs to the Clevedon-Brookly Road. „ The inspector reported that 24 applications for the erection of dwellings and other buildings to the value of £7,30* had been received. During the month eight notifications of infectious diseases had been received, four fumigations had been carried out and 10 visits had been made. The tender of Messrs. Grinter Bros, of £895 18s for the. concrete paving of the Great South Road, Wirt Bridge approach, and the tender of Evans and McNair of £79 for work- on the Flatbush SchoolRedoubt Road, were accepted, at a meeting of a committee to consider tenders. The engineer reported that the work had been commenced. The Manurewa . and Papakura Town Boards wrote advising that they were iit favour of the erection of a public pound at Takanini. It was decided that the engineer obtain an estimate of cost of the erection of a pound on a suitable Site in the vicinity of Takanini. A letter was received from Mr. P. S. Pegleii with reference to a proposed site for a public cemetery for the districts of Otahuhu, Manurewa, Papakura, Papatoetoe, and the Fapatoetoe and Papakura Ridings, and offering to sell his property on the Totara Park Estate for the purpose. It was decided that in the event of a conference of local bodies concerned being called the council was prepared to send a delegate.
