Turf Notes

Conducted by

“EARLY BIRD.”

Racing Carnival Ends Successfully PRINCE HUMPHREY PROVES HIMSELF WITS a totalisator increase for the four days of £38,062, and with excellent racing" throughout, the summer meeting" of the Auckland Racing" Club, concluded yesterday, will go down in turf history as one of the most successful the club has ever held. The sport yesterday was of the highest class.

T>AIN in the forenoon no doubt ; affected the attendance, but nevertheless there was a large crowd. Although threatening for the first three races, the clouds cleared away and the afternoon was fine and warm, with a cooling breeze. The going was in splendid order, and the times recorded i were good. Yesterday the totalisator handled £78,679*. an increase of £857 over the figures for the concluding day 12 months ago. This made the amount invested during the meeting £294,487i (an average of £98.622 per day), as against £356,425* for the last summer gathering, the increase being £38,062. Notes on the racing, and details of concluding results, follow: Sir Archie Improves All started in the Goodwood Handicap, and in a good opening pool Sir Archie, £1,710, wound up favourite, while there was some money for Scat, £1,226, Day Guard, £1,054, and Paper Boy, £1,009. Serang, Day Guard, Le Choucas. Royal Diadem, Paper Boy. Scat, and Archeno was the order out of the harrier, but at the end of a furlong Day Guard took up the running, and, setting a merry pace, led past the five furlongs from Le Choucas, Royal Diadem, Paper Boy, High Pitch, Archeno, Sir Archie, Serang, and Wenday. with Scat last. The favourite moved up crossing the top, and into the straight was half a length behind Day Guard,

while close up were Sir Archie and Paper Boy, with Archeno, Wenday, Serang, and Scat following. The favourite came away in the run home, to score by a length and a-half rom Day Guard, with Le Choucas, who had Day Guard beaten at the half distance, another half-length back. Archeno was fourth, and then came Wenday, Paper Boy, Scat, Royal Diadem, and High Pitch. Raasay Easily The top-weight, Raasay, was a big fancy in the Sylvia Handicap, being entrusted with £3,024, others to claim fair support being Patadawn, £1,494, Marion’s Birthday, £1;232, and Mauriaena, £1,144. A fine start saw Raasay hop out smartly with Mauriaena, the pair being followed by Patadawn, Justify, Marion’s Birthday, Moehau, and Shot Silk, with Mithra soon tailing off. Raasay led past the four furlongs by a length and a-half from Moehau, Mauriaena, and Justify, these three being in a line, and then were Shot Silk and Marion’s Birthday further back. Into the straight Raasay still retained his advantage, with Mauriaena, Patadawn, and Moehau close up, and Mithra, Marion's Birthday, and Justify next in order. The favourite gave nothing else a show in the run in, winning by three lengths frrmi Mauriaena, who was two lengths in front of Mithra. with Patadawn a head away fourth. Marion's Birthday was fifth, and Moehau sixth, with Shot Silk and Justify at intervals. Mask's Good Finish Transformer was taken out of the Grandstand Handicap and of the nine runners most money was forthcoming for Mask £3.630, who was at a short price, while Bennanee £2,255, Dorec

£1,390, In the Shade £1,299 and Battlement £1,345. Doree, Gala Day and Siaosi were in a line out of the straight, followed by Battlement, In the Shade, Cohesion. Mask, Bennanee and Front Rank. Passing the old mile Siaosi was in the van. and was attended past the six furlongs by Gala Day In the Shade, Doree, Cohesion and Battlement, with Mask, Bennanee and Front Rank the last three in a line. Crossing the top Bennanee improved his position, and they came into the straight with Gala Day as the pilot from Siaosi. Doree. In the Shade, Battlement. Cohesion and Bennanee, with Mask and Front Rank the last two. Doree and In the Shade were on terms at the distance, with the favourite coming strongly, and in a good finish Mask scored well by three parts of a length from Doree, with Ln the Shade a neck away third. Battlement was nearly a length away fourth, and then came Bennanee, Cohesion, Siaosi and Front Rank with Gala Day last. Wedding March Comfortably Lord Star was taken out of the Auckland Hurdles, the stable relying on Wedding March, and their judgment proved correct. He was a hot favourite, with £ 2.754, Glenotus £ 1,237. and Archibald £1,136. being the only ethers considered. Beau Cavalier made the early pace from Red Comet (who crashed at the second fence). Archibald. Wedding March. Karamu and Glenotus, with Blue Sky well back, and finally

pulling up before a round had been covered. Karamu was up with the leader at the stands, the pair being three lengths ahead of Wedding March and Archibald, with Glenotus close up. At the five furlongs, Archibald made a bad jump and was out of the running. Beau Cavalier and’ the favourite

Archibald was 12 lengths away, and at intervals came Glenotus and Karamu. PRINCE HUMPHREY AT A PRICE There was an upset in the Royal Stakes. Prince Humphrey, the outsider, winning comfortably and giving a double figure return in a four-horse race. Stagliunter, £3,242, was a firm favourite, while Eulalie, £2,380. was next best backed. At the five furlongs Stagliunter was in front of Eulalie, Gascony and Prince Humphrey, the last-named | standing the leader three lengths start. Thus they raced to the home turn, [where Stagliunter was half a length in front of Eulalie, with Gascony on the inner another length and Prince Humphrey behind him.
