Prizes in Journalism. —Prizes in journalism have been awarded by the Auckland University College Council to the Rev. E. Lyons and Mr. Iv. V. Wilmot.

Gorse on Fire. —The Dcvonport Fire Brigade received a call to Shoal Bay Road at 4.50 yesterday afternoon to a gorse fire. No damage was done.

Native Struck by Car. —A native was knocked down by a motor-car at Ratstihi on Saturday night and taken to the hospital.

Man’s Hand Injured. —Mr. Edward Byers, aged 31, a married man. residing at 1 Altham Avenue, Edendnlc. was admitted to the hospital this morning with a lacerated hand.

Australian Mail Coming. —The Chief Postmaster advises that the Manuka which left Melbourne on Saturday last for Wellington has on board 15 bags of Australian mail for Auckland.

Alleged Theft of Clothes. —Richard Francis White, aged 28, charged at the Police Court to-day with stealing a suit valued at £6 19s 6d, was remanded to appear on Thursday.

A Missing Dog. —Claude Randolph Marmont, aged 37. was fined 10s at the Police Court to-day for drunkenness. On a charge of stealing, a dog he was remanded to appear on Thursday.

Burnec’ by Benzine. —Painful burns were received by Mr. S. France, of Raetihi, on Sunday. He was cleaning some articles with benzine when there was an explosion. He is now in hospital.

Fire in Bedroom. —At about 10 o'clock this morning the Devonport Fire Brigade answered a call to No. 7 Cowper Street, where a bedroom was on fire. A bed and part of a wall were slightly damaged.

• Land District Centre. —A movement has been started in Waikato to havo the headquarters of the Auckland Land District removed to Hamilton, which, it is claimed, is much more centrally situated than the city.

Death at Hamilton. —The death is reported of Mr. James B. Allan, of Hamilton, at the age of 86 years. lie landed in Auckland in 1864 under engagement with the Auckland Gas Company. Commerce Scholarships. —The Auckland University College has approved of a recommendation from the Director of the School of Commerce that commerce scholarships be awarded to Miss Olga Willis and Mr. F. B. Stephens. Gored By Wild Pig. —Mr. Frank Goodwin, aged 22, farmer, of Okato. was admitted to the New Plymouth Hospital suffering from a wound in his left leg inflicted by a wild pig. His condition is satisfactory. Shooting Fatality. —At an inquest at Marton to-day on the death of John S. Kerr, aged 23. who died on Sunday as the result of a shooting mishap at Kawhatau yesterday, a verdict of death from a gun-shot wound accidentally self-inflicted, was returned. —Press Assn. Pioneer Journalist.—The death i.s announced of Mr. J. N. Taylor, aged ; 73. one of the pioneers of illustrated i journalism in New Zealand. Hamilton Maternity Ward. —The I Minister of Health, the Hon- J. A. Young, speaking at the opening o? the 1 wing of the Waikato Hospital, promised that the Government would give £ for £ on all money collected for the proposed maternity ward.
