Outsiders Bob up at Woodville

ROYAL DAMON IMPRESSIVE JOY BIRD TAKES THE HANDICAP (Special to THE SUN.) WOODVILLE, Wednesday. Heavy rain fell before the opening of the Woodville summer meeting today, but it cleared during the afternoon and most of the racing was held in fine weather. The track was slightly affected by the rain, and the racing was good. The totalisator, handled £13,958, against £15,319 on the first day of last year. REVEL AT LAST In a small betting pool Mister Gamp wound up favourite from lied Fuchsia in the Hurdles, the former carrying £167 and the latter £l6l, Revel, the winner, being entrusted with but £64. Revel and Red Fuchsia were the early leaders from Star Area and Braeman, although a faulty jump at the first fence almost cost the last named his rider. Passing through the straight Polyphemus went to the front to show the way into and along the back to Revel, Hyama, Red Fuchsia, Star Area and Chrissarto, Mister Gamp and Sir Moment being in the rear. Polyphemus was going along nicely in the van, but rounding the. top Red Fuchsia and Revel commenced to make up the leeway, and once over the last fence Revel headed the leader to win by a length, with Red Fuchsia three lengths back. Then came Star Area, Braeman, Mister Gamp and Chrissarto. CHELONE WINS EASILY Tragic ancf Cornhill were the defections from the first division and Eliminator from the second division in the Trial Plate, in which Chelone £ 280 was preferred to Royal Picture £213 and Dainty Ways £193, with Card Trick £l6B next in demand; Skyrider, who had ; drawn the inside position, was slow to find his feet, Chelone running to the ■ front from Skybird. and Gunpowder. Royal Picture improved his position crossing the top to attend the favourite into the straight, with Mendip and Skyrider next in attendance. The leader was, however, never troubled to win by three lengths,, with -a length between Royal Picture and Mark Mint. Then came Skyrider and Mendip, with a gap to Kahu Ariki apd Gunpowder. Chelone won very easily. CARD TRICK SUCCESSFUL Although Scintillate was fast to begin in the second division, Card Trick, who had run a good third at Feilding on the final day, quickly ran to the front from Air Force, Moutoa King and Scintillate. They turned for home in that order, and although Air Force and Moutoa King lodged challenges they could not get closer than three lengths of .Card Trick, Air Force managing to hold off Moutoa King by half a length. Attending the placed horses were Dainty Ways', Greengrocer, Scintillate and Spearmiss. GRAND KNIGHT FAILS BADLY Grand Knight £546 was elected favourite for the Woodville Handicap,

; with money for Anolo £337 and Royal Game £224, Gaze being the outsidei of the field with 19 tickets invested . upon his chances. Joy Bird was I squeezed out at the barrier rise, C-imu-bue, Waicullus and Royal Game piloting the field as they passed out of the straight, with Grand Knight, Joy Bird, David. Garrick, Gaze, Anolo and Tintoretto next in order, the field being well bunched. Going along the back Joy Bird ran up to Cimabue, who two furlongs later gave way to Waicullus, who led Joy Bird into the straight. With beads straightened out Joy Bird ran past the leader with Anolo in pursuit, and altlioLigh the challenger promised to overtake the Feilding Cup winner, the Argosy mare responded under pressure to prevail by a length, with David Garrick another length back. Then came Waicullus, Cimabue, Tintoretto, Gaze, Grand Knight and Royal Game. Joy Bird’.s was a fair performan’ce, and ,as at Feilding she paid a good dividend. TWO BIG DIVIDENDS The defection of Panther, Keddar, Merle, Expense, Arrow Boy, Hine Hohoro and Veronese left a field of 14 runners to go to the post in the Flying Handicap, Lucky Days £286 being preferred to Eka £258, with Miss Pat £214. next in demand. The winner, however, was Helotis, who wrested the lead from Miss Pat crossing the top to lead the latter, Eka, Aston, Ring Boy and Some Lad into the straight. The leader retained her advantage to win nicely by a length and a-half, with Ring Boy, who finished fast on the rails, a length ahead of Eka. Lucky Days was fourth, with Some Lad, Aston, Courageous and Miss Pat next.

Helotis did her work well and really won very easily, the going suiting her. She paid one of the best dividends of the day, while Ring Boy’s price was a surprise. RAILWAY CANDIDATE SCORES Royal Damon. (£469) was installed favourite for the Oete Handicap, the o-’on flying, although good support was also forthcoming for Sarcliee £399, and Arrow Lad £385, with Epistle £2BB next in demand. Epistle was smartest to begin and led Sarcliee, Gold Box and Arrow Lad to the turn, where the last-named ran up to the front, while Royal Damon also improved his position and was on terms with Sarcliee at the entrance. Royal Damon quickly gathered in the leader, and although Arrow Lad responded the Polydamon gelding went on to win by a length and

a-half, with Epistle third, three lengths back. Sarchee was fourth, being followed home by Piuthair and Imitation. Royal Damon had the field at his mercy all the way, and won comfortably. YOUNGSTERS SURPRISE Ridgemount, The Earth and Briar Root were absentees from the Nursery, and in the absence of the firstnamed Marion’s Birthday was installed favourite, the Psychology filly carrying £483, as compared with £371 by Tea Miss, with a drop of £l7l to Australis. Chit was smartest to begin, to pilot Shot Silk, Tea Miss, Marion’s Birthday and Australis to the straight entrance, where Shot Silk gave way to Tea Miss and Marion’s Birthday. At the distance Chit looked all over a winner until Millais, who had been lying seventh at the straight entrance, came on the scene with a sustained run, to gradually overhaul the leader and take the honours on the post by a head. Two lengths back came Australis, with Flying Hero and Moutoa Treasury next. Millais deserved to win, coming from well back with a fine finishing run. He is one of the Leighton breed. CONSISTENT WANDERLUST Backers devoted their attention to Wanderlust and Partaga in the Borough Handicap, and the pair filled the places. Partaga got away well and led alofig the back from Inner Harbour, Bright Knight, Tanagra, Wanderlust and Coot. Inner Harbour joined Partaga across the top and the pair led from Coot and Wanderlust, with Superb King next, wliile I-loro-mea was moving up. Wanderlust ran up to Partaga in the straight, and after a short fight got the best of him and won by a length. Superb King was third five lengths awav. and Coot. Horomea, Tanagra and Othon were together, next. SWEET BUTTERSCOTCH There was a big set in favour of Limosa. before the machine closed on th ® B i £ roi i §rh Handicap. Henna, Kalos and Gordon Swift were among the early leaders, and Butterscotch moved up six furlongs from home and went to the front long before the straight was reached, Kalos, Henna and Limosa being handy.
