News comes from America of new stockings that cost 500 dollars a pair; that is over £IOO. It seems an impossibly large sum to pay lor stockings, but apparently they are made of inconceivably fine silk, hand-spun, one imagines, from magical cocoons. The stockings arc hand-worked in a lace pattern, so tine that it took the French woman who undertook the task over a year to complete It. The pattern is as flawless as it is delicate. One feels that with £loo stockings on walking atvroad would be too much of an anxiety to have any pleasure in it at all.

Miss A. Dale. of Southsca. (Eng.), who left London recently in charge of a number of domestic servants bound for New Zealand, has been occupied in this kind of work for over 40 years. This, her 56th trip to New Zealand, is to be her last. Her first voyage was made in the sailing ship Sukar, and she has travelled altogether over one and a quarter million miles at sea. When in New Zealand she often visits the girls she brought out in her early days. Most of them are married and have families, and the majority have done well.
