GOOD TRIALS

GALLOPS AT ELLERSLIE CARINTHIA’S SMART SEVEN WAR OFFICER ALSO PLEASES Fine weather and fast tracks were the favourable conditions at Ellerslie this morning, and a number of horses claiming engagements at the Takapuna meeting were galloped in continuation of their preparation for that fixture. Most of the work was done on the course proper, with the trestle 18ft out from the rails, while there were one or two try-outs on No. 2 grass track. ON COURSE PROPER The two-year-old Red Lion came home very easily from the three furlong post in 42 and was not after time. He looks well. Beau Cavalier was allowed to stride over seven furlongs, and after cutting the first four in 53 3-5, he completed his task very nicely in 1.36 2-5. Antrim Boy, with a fair weight up, was sent half a mile by himself, and going well within himself all the way he reeled off 50 1-5 for the distance. It was a pleasing effort. Whaka King finished just in front of Double Mint, with Valsier further back, at the end of a six furlong spin. The first couple took 26 1-5, three furlongs 38 2-5, and they completed the six in 1.20 1-5. Whaka King and Double Mint moved along in pleasing style. ACUSHLA PLEASES Since she sprang her surprise victory at the Thames meeting, Aeushla seems to have taken a new lease of life, for she went very well in a seven furlong flutter. She negotiated the initial two furlongs in a slick 24 2-5, the halfmile in 50 3-5, and she finished in 1.32 2-5. Having set such a solid pace over the early part it was but natural that she should be tiring at the end, but all the same it was a fine gallop. Piet and The Lover went six furlongs together, and after getting to the end of the initial two in 26 they passed the post in ILLS 1-5. The two-year-old Camp Prince sprinted home three furlongs, and as he was slow getting into his stride he took 43 3-5. WAR OFFICER WELL An interesting gallop was that participated in by Restaurant and the two Takapuna Plate candidates War Officer and Abbey Day, both from R. H. Brown’s stable. From a standing start, in which Abbey Day was bumped by her stable mate, the first furlong took 15 2-5, the two furlongs 28 1-5, and three furlongs in 40 2-5, the final three being run in 41, making the full journey 1.21 2-5. War Officer finished full of running just ahead of Restaurant and appeared to have something in hand. Tidal was better than Idun over five furlongs cut out in 1.6, after leaving the first couple behind in 24 3-5. A GOOD effort Another fine try-out was that of Carintliia, who was sent seven furlongs in company with Winsome Boy an.d Whakarite. The first furlong was j done in 12 1-5, two furlongs in 24 2-5, three furlongs in 37 3-5, half a mile in 50, and the final three in 40 3-5, the full seven furlongs being left behind in 1.30 2-5. It was a brilliant exhibition on the part of Carinthia, who finished well in front after running about in the straight. Bombarder was going better than Pom perns over five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. the first two taking 23 3-5. They finished strongly after being a bit slow after the jump-off. Daddy’s Girl went once round, covering the last mile in 1.48 4-5, the first four furlongs of which took 55, It was not a bad gallop. Ash Tray picked him up at the six furlongs, but she finished well back. Diamond Queen and White Light were associated over six furlongs, which they left behind in 1.21 1-5, after moving over the first three in 39. AFTER BREAKFAST There were several try-outs after the breakfast adjournment. Bizarro and Marita were on terms at the end of half a mile in 53, and Lord Guy and Honeheke covered six furlongs in an easy 1.23 4-5. Wyoming and Automne were paired over six furlongs, and they finished together in 1.20, running the first three in 38 1-5. The former appeared to be going the better at the end. Levenside moved very freely in a gallop once round, the time, 2.4, being good. Levenside is among those engaged in the High weight Handicap on Saturday. CUP CANDIDATES A trio of Alison Cup candidates— Golden Krist, Royal Mint and Mint Leaf—were sent once round. Golden Krist finished a little in front of Mint Leaf, with Royal Mint a length and a half further back, although the lastnamed could have been closer if it had been desired. They ran the last half mile in, 54 1-5, and the nine furlongs in 2.2 1-5. They were ridden by lightweights. Quinvardia and Kamehameha ran seven furlongs in 1.34 3-5, and did it well, and Kara mu covered six furlongs in 1.21, the final four m 54 1-5. Arch Queen went a round in 2.2 3-5, the last six furlongs taking 1.21 1-5. Slump, Ahi Xgaro and Amos ran six furlongs in 1.20 1-5, the first half of the trip taking 38 2-5. Hipo, who is to contest the Borough Handicap on Saturday, went half a mile nicely in 51, coming home over the last three furlongs in 38 4-5.
