IF any oil-vending firms had hoped to place an extra penny a gallon on the price of petrol, over and above the fourpence tax provided in the Government’s Bill, they will not be pleased with the statement of the Prime Minister on the subject. “It is not worth while trying to make huge profits out of this,” he said this evening. “We have the fourpence tax plus—and there must be a plus—but when you talk of an extra penny it is ridiculous. It might work out at a farthing.” Mr. Coates estimated that the extra tax would cost a lorry in the vicinity of a penny a mile extra, and ordinary cars a farthing a mile extra.
