Bakers’ Wives Go Dancing

A NIGHT OF REVELRY AT DIXIELAND SPIRIT OF FRIVOLITY It took a long time for even the joyous Dixieland Orchestra to break down the: rather stilted atmosphere of decorum and straight-faced “correctness” that prevailed during the early part of the dance given last evening by the delegates to the bakers’ conference and their wives, and other feminine friends. When the ice was broken, though . . . well, we have seen Auckland folk enjoy themselves on occasions, but hardly ever have they so entered into the spirit of frivolity as did the bakers and their W.A.O.F.F. Dance followed dance in quick succession and Clyde Howley and his Internationals were given little rest, so insistent became the demands for encores. From the snappiest of. Charleston tunes the bakers’ fancies flew to thoughts of old-fashioned .round waltzes, and they wore expressions of utter bliss when their wish for a waltz was gratified. Favours in infinite variety were distributed and were eagerly seized and played with as earnestly as though the dancers were school kiddies. When at last the dance concluded the throng of folk joined hands and sang as lustily as could be “For Auld Lang Syne.” Among those present were: Mrs. McMillan, Wellington, wearing black satin, with a lace overdress.
