CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP HONOURS ARCHDEACON
JUBILEE ANNIVERSARY CEREMONY AT GREY LYNN The Archbishop of New Zealand, Dr. Redwood, and three of his brother bishops of the Roman Catholic Church, will pay honour in Auckland to-morrow to Archdeacon Holbrook, who will celebrate the silver jubilee of his ordination as a. priest. Solemn High Mass will be celebrated by Archdeacon Holbrook. In tho sanctuary will be Archbishop Redwood, the Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Cleary), his coadjutor bishop (Dr. Liston), and the Bishop of Dunedin (Dr. Whyte). The parishioners of St. Joseph’s, Grey Lynn, will make a presentation to Archdeacon Elolbrook at a social function at Scots’ Hall, Symonds Street, in the evening. The archbishop and the bishops will attend. It was during Father Holbrook’s association with St. Patrick’s Cathedral that the. edifice was completed. Cardinal Moran, at a memorable gathering in 1908, blessed and opened the cathedral. Some years before, in conjunction with Brother George, he founded the Marist Brothers Old Boys’ Association. The Men’s Confraternity of the Holy Name was also instituted by the archdeacon.
Born in Wexford, Ireland, in 1879, Father Holbrook answered the call of the late Bishop Lenihan in 18S9 for volunteers for service in Auckland. Since then he has been prominently identified with the work of the diocese. Father Holbrook was appointed to St. Joseph’s, Grey Lynn, after a return visit to Ireland in 1913. The present flourishing condition of the parish is due to his acknowledged administrative capacity. The direction of the Catholic orphanages of this city has also been vested in him, and this is a work which has occupied much of Archdeacon Holbrook’s attention. He was raised to his present dignity three years ago.
