SCHOONER GREYHOUND STRANDED ON REEF
WRECK NEAR SUVA VESSEL BADLY HOLED (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, July 29. Bound for Suva the auxiliary schooner Greyhound, 108 tons, ran on to the reef at Nasota on the night of June 26, and has been abandoned to the underwriters. The reef, which is about 12 miles from Suva, has been the graveyard of many fine vessels. The passengers were safely taken off in a launch and brought to Suva, but 75 tons of copra remains aboard and is well soaked with sea water. The Greyhound is the property of the Fiji Shipping Company, and was one of the most popular vessels in the Island trade. A visit to the scene of the wreck by H.M.S. Laburnum disclosed that the seas had thrown the Greyhound well up on the reef and that she had a big hole in her bottom.
The Greyhound was built by Messrs. Lane and Sons at Whangaroa in 1899, and for some years was owned by Captain Subritzky, of Auckland, who employed her in the Hokiang-a trade. She was afterwards sold to the Northern Steamship Company, who continued to use the vessel on the Hokianga run. Subsequently the Greyhound was purchased by the Fiji Shipping Company. She was equipped with a 60 horse-power oil engine.
