JEAN DEVANNY, the Wellington authoress, whose novel, “The Butcher Shop,” aroused such a storm of contoversy, has produced a volume of short stories under the title “Old Savage.” One reviewer in the Old Country says: “I had to stop reading them in sheer disgust. What do the publishers mean by boosting this slimy sex stuff as ‘striking a note that is at once deep and full? Surely New Zealand can yield literature of a higher quality than this?”
